Political leaders oppose attempt to remove Sivaji statue

DMK leader M. Karunanidhi and MDMK general secretary Vaiko have condemned the submission by the Chennai City Police before the Madras High Court that the statue of thespian Sivaji Ganesan on Kamarajar Salai-Radhakrishnan Salai was obstructing the visibility of motorists. Mr. Karunanidhi, who unveiled the statue when the DMK was in power, said those who sought to remove the statue would pay the price for it. “If those who removed the statue of Kannagi from Marina are intent on removing the statue of my friend Sivaji Ganesan, let them reap the outcome of their actions,” he said in a statement. Mr. Vaiko accused the government of “political vendetta” because the statue was erected by the previous DMK regime. “A lot of accidents are taking place on the same road because of drunk driving. So the argument of the government that the statue is obstructing the flow of traffic cannot be accepted,” he said. Former Union Minister E.V.K.S. Elangovan said it was highly condemnable if the government was acting out of political vendetta to remove the statue. “If the statue is really hindering the flow of traffic and causing accidents, it should be shifted to a suitable place where people could visit and pay tribute to the actor,” he said. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee Organisation secretary K. Ramalinga Jothi wondered why the South Indian Film Artistes’ Association was remaining silent without launching a protest against the police petition filed in High Court.

விடுதலைப்புலிகளின் தலைவர் பிரபாகரனின் 59–வது பிறந்தநாளை நாம் தமிழர் கட்சி கொண்டாடி வருகிறது. மதுரை வில்லா புரத்தில் இன்று பிறந்தநாள் கொண்டாட்டமாக ரத்த தான முகாம் நடத்தப்பட்டது. மாநில ஒருங்கிணைப்பாளர் வெற்றிக்குமரன் தலைமை தாங்கினார். மாவட்ட செயலாளர்கள் சிவானந்தம், செங்கன்னன் ஆகியோர் முன்னிலை வகித்தனர். நாம் தமிழர் கட்சியின் தலைவர் சீமான் முகாமை தொடங்கி வைத்தார். பின்னர் அவர் நிருபர்களிடம் கூறியதாவது:– நாம் தமிழர் கட்சி இலங்கை தமிழர்களுக்காக தொடர்ந்து போராடி வருகிறது. இலங்கையில் தமிழர்களுக்கு தனி நாடு கேட்டு வலியுறுத்தி வருகிறோம். எங்கள் போராட்டம் ஆயுத போராட்டமாக இருக்காது. அரசியல் போராட்டமாகத் தான் இருக்கும். இலங்கை தமிழர்களுக்கு தனி நாடு என்பதுதான் எங்களது குறிக்கோள். வருகிற பாராளுமன்ற தேர்தலில் நாங்கள் போட்டியிடமாட்டோம். ஆனால் சட்டமன்ற தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடுவோம். திராவிட கட்சிகளால் தமிழர்களுக்கு எந்த பிரயோஜனமும் இல்லை. வாக்குக்காகவே அவர்கள் அரசியல் நடத்துகின்றனர். எங்களை முன்பு கேலி செய்தவர்கள் இப்போது தமிழர் பிரச்சினையை கையில் எடுத்துக்கொண்டு அரசியல் நடத்துகின்றனர். இலங்கையில் நடைபெற்ற போர்குற்றம், இனப் படுகொலை போன்றவை இப்போது வெளிச்சத்துக்கு வந்துள்ளது. இதனை இங்கிலாந்து பிரதமர் டேவிட் கேமரூன்தான் வெளிச்சத்திற்கு கொண்டு வந்துள்ளார். இந்தியா செய்ய வேண்டிய வேலையை, இங்கிலாந்து செய்துள்ளது. இலங்கையில் தமிழர்கள் கொலை செய்யப்பட்டதால் காமன்வெல்த் மாநாட்டை புறக்கணிக்கிறோம் என்று மொரீசியஸ் பிரதமர் அறிவித்தார். ஆனால் இந்திய பிரதமர் தான் பங்கேற்காததற்கான காரணத்தை சொல்லவில்லை. இலங்கையில் தமிழர்களின் தனி நாடு கோரிக்கைக்கு ஆதரவு பெருகி வருகிறது. இலங்கை பிரச்சினைக்கு தனி நாடுதான் நிரந்தர தீர்வு. மத்தியில் காங்கிரஸ் ஆட்சி மாறவேண்டும். விரைவில் அதுமாறும். அப்போது இந்திய அரசு இலங்கையில் தமிழர்களின் தனி நாட்டுக்கு ஆதரவு தெரிவிக்கும். இவ்வாறு அவர் கூறினார். ரத்ததான முகாமின் போது 'தடா' சந்திரசேகரன், விஜயகுமார் மற்றும் பலர் உடன் இருந்தனர்.

மதுரை அருகே கடந்த 2012-இல் நிகழ்ந்த பெட்ரோல் குண்டு வீச்சு வழக்கின் விசாரணைக்கு ஆஜராகாத ஒருவருக்கு நீதிமன்றம் பிடிவாரண்ட் பிறப்பித்து திங்கள்கிழமை உத்தரவிட்டது. மதுரை மாவட்டம் புளியங்குளத்தைச் சேர்ந்த பலர் கடந்த ஆண்டு தேவர் ஜயந்திக்காக ராமநாதபுரம் மாவட்டம் பசும்பொன்னிற்குச் சென்றுவிட்டு காரில் ஊர் திரும்பினர். மதுரை சிந்தாமணி பகுதியில் சுற்றுச்சாலையில் அவர்கள் வந்தபோது, மர்மக்கும்பல் கார் மீது பெட்ரோல் குண்டு வீசியது. இதில் 7 பேர் உயிரிழந்தனர். 13 பேர் காயமடைந்தனர். இச்சம்பவம் தொடர்பாக அவனியாபுரம் போலீஸார் வழக்குப்பதிந்து விசாரித்தனர். அதன்படி 13 பேர் மீது வழக்குத் தொடரப்பட்டது. வழக்கானது மதுரை 6-ஆவது நீதித்துறை நடுவர் நீதிமன்றத்தில் நடைபெற்றுவருகிறது. வழக்கு விசாரணைக்கு அனைவரும் ஆஜரான நிலையில், சந்தோஷ் என்பவர் ஆஜராகவில்லை. இதையடுத்து அவருக்கு பிடிவாரண்ட் பிறப்பித்து மாஜிஸ்திரேட் கோவிந்தராஜ் உத்தரவிட்டார். வழக்கின் விசாரணை டிசம்பர் 30-ஆம் தேதிக்கு தள்ளிவைக்கப்பட்டது. .

Appa taught me everything: Prabhu Ganesan

It’s easy to get lost in the awe induced by one of the nation’s greatest ever actors and reminisce about the past, but when a beaming Prabhu comes along, all swagger, handsomeness and charisma personified, you are reminded that the Sivaji legacy is well and truly alive. From the talented young man who endeared himself to audiences’ hearts with 'Agni Natchathiram' and 'Chinna Thambi', to his seasoned character performances in the more recent 'Ayan' or '3', Prabhu’s film journey is a classic example of an actor’s perfect transition through time. Appa always said that here should be healthy competition — but never jealousy. I stand by that as well. When I see the likes of my son, Vikram and Karthik’s son, Gautham act now, I’m reminded now of the times their fathers acted together. (laughs) In 'Yennamo Yedho', I have the pleasure of working with Gautham, and he is someone with so much potential.” Prabhu smiles. Talking about son Vikram, his face immediately brightens, “When he was studying in San Diego State University, he directed a play which completely surprised me — I was aware of his talent only then. After assisting director Vishnuvardhan and gaining experience, he informed my brother, Ramkumar and me of his intention to act. Since he’d be the third generation from our family donning the greasepaint, I warned him of the massive expectations. But he was upto the task; he lost a lot of weight, trained hard, went around to all the directors with his portfolio, before Kumki with Prabhu Solomon finally happened. I’m so happy that his career has taken off, and his next, 'Ivan Vera Mathiri', is highly anticipated as well. I would love to act with him in a film if the right script were to come calling,” Prabhu muses, adding, “It was my wife, Punitha, who was reassuring the family that Vikram made the right choice and would come out trumps. She is not someone who likes the limelight, and is quite shy — but Punitha is truly the guardian of our joint family, and ensures we are all well taken care of. You only need to take a look at me once to know that!” (guffaws) But enough about Gen Y — let’s rewind back a few years to when he was a bristling youngster, shall we? “Would you believe I was football captain, played hockey and cricket in school, and even won at javelin during college — I was quite the sportsperson in my slimmer days! I loved dancing and used to win a lot of contests too; I still remember my dancing partner, Yasmin Welch, during our traditional get-together at Bishop Cotton Senior Boys’ & Girls’ School. I always loved horses, and till today, I’m an active member of the Madras Riding School. In fact, I own a few indigenous Marwari horses. All my children have, like me, learnt silambu sandai, which my dad made me learn,” he reminisces, with several chuckles in between. And then acting happened. “Yes, I was quite young when I began acting; actually, I’ll even admit that it was an accident. But eventually, with time and maturity, I learnt to stake my claim. I would pick my second coming, with movies like 'Chinna Thambi', 'Kaalapani' and so on, as my best phase, when I really honed my skills. In my career, I’ve worked with over 65 debutant directors and acted alongside some of the country’s finest. I’ve had a full life, indeed. Now I’m more relaxed, laid back and enjoying my work, doing character roles. This transition was important to me,” Prabhu remarks. But no conversation we have at the Annai Illam could be complete without his recollections of his father. “Everyone calls him Sivaji appa; that’s how it’s always been. Simply put, he’s taught me everything in life. Even this year, for his remembrance on July 21, we had people from all over the country come in to pay their respects. His 1964 film, Karnan, re-released last year and was a hit — that’s how much people still love him. My only regret is that I wish appa and other members of my family had been alive to see Vikram act,” he says. Prabhu signs off smiling, “Appa had so many friends across borders; whichever part of the world I go, someone recognises me and tells me they were a dear friend of his. When I’m acting in Telugu, Kannada, or Malayalam films, fans and other actors come talk to me about him. His legacy is immortal, and we’re all truly blessed to be his family. His memory shall always live on through us.”

Naam Thamizhar cadres stage protest in Coimbatore

Political parties staged protests across the city on Friday condemning the demolition of a portion of the compound wall of the Mullivaikkal Memorial in Thanjavur. The police and the Department of Highways had carried out the demolition claiming that the wall was encroaching upon the highways. Arrested A group of 16 cadre of the Naam Thamizhar Katchi were arrested after they staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Collectorate. They raised slogans against the State Government. Even as a huge posse of police personnel were deployed, a couple of cadre attempted to scale the Collectorate gate. They were stopped by the police personnel and removed from the scene. They were released in the evening.
