MADURAI: The Madurai bench of Madras high court on Friday ordered notice to chief secretary Debendranath Sarangi, on a contempt petition filed against him for not implementing a court order to display portraits of leaders like U Muthuramalinga Thevar, C Rajagopala Achari, Thanthai Periyar, Dr B R Ambedkar and Kamaraj.
In a PIL filed by advocate B Stalin, the Tamil Nadu government had issued a government order on October 24, 1980, listing out national leaders whose portraits should be displayed at the secretariat, collectorates and offices of all heads of departments.
In February, a bench had directed the chief secretary to do the same within four months. But even after the period ended on September 1, there had been no tangible progress.
