Mike Mohan Turns Villian In SJ Surya Film

Remember Mohan a.k.a. ‘Mike’ Mohan, the super-hit hero throughout the eighties and till mid-nineties? Karnataka-born Mohan starred in more than 70 films as hero in Tamil opposite almost all the leading ladies in the eighties and nineties. His heroines included Poornima Bhagyaraj, Suhasini, Nadhiya, Radha, Amibica, Amala, Sasikala, Nalini, Revathy, Oorvasi and many others.
Mohan survived on ‘dubbed voice’ (of playback singer S.N.Surendhar) who worked for him in almost all his movies barring a couple of them. In fact, Mohan’s ‘own’ voice appeared so alien compared to his on-screen voice of SNS. Though he wasn’t a great actor by any stretch of imagination, all the songs lip-synched by him and sung by SPB mostly in Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music had gone on to become super-duper hit songs.

Mohan is synonymous with ‘Mike’ as he has played the singer’s role in many films and looks as if he’s born with the mike. After a gap of more than a decade, Mohan made his comeback as hero in a dud titled Suttapazham a few years back. The film didn’t do a great business at the box-office as today’s generation of youths apparently didn’t like a hero who had his voice lent by someone else.

Though he got offers to star in many tele-sterials, he was particular that he would only be playing the lead roles and not sundry ones in films and on the telly. Finally, he has now given his consent to star in an upcoming film which is to be directed by one of the former assistant directors of actor-director S.J. Suriyah. The film is as yet untitled at the time of this news going to thepress.

It may be recalled that Mohan had earlier played to perfection the ‘negative hero’ in the film Nooravadhu Naal in the eighties!

Record in stone

The Pandya Nadu Centre for Historical Research (PCHR) discovered and deciphered a new inscription that throws light on the Sethupathi reign at Palayanur village near Thiruppuvanam in Sivagangai District recently.
The 1717 AD inscription is engraved on a stone slab planted on a bund of an irrigation tank in the village and belongs to the reign of Sethupathi Kaaththa Ragunatha Devar. It mentions a land donation made by Udaiyah Devar to Kailasanatha temple. On the back of the inscribed slab a trident is engraved with sun and moon above it.
The Kailasanatha Temple is now housed in a small thatched structure called Neeli Temple.
C. Santhalingam, secretary, PCHR, says that the Palaiyanur Neeli myth is very popular among Tamil folks. Neeli, wife of a merchant, killed her husband, who had married again and left her destitute. It is believed, he says, that this happened at Palaiyanur, North Arcot District, (Thiruvalangadu). But no temple is built for Neeli in Tamil Nadu except this temple at Palaiyanur in Sivagangai District.
The Neeli myth is recorded for the first time in 7th century Sambanthar Devaram. Umapathi Sivachariya elaborated the myth in his Sekkilar Puranam during 12-13th century.
Though the temple is known as ‘Neeli Temple,’ Santhalingam says, it houses a Linga in its sanctum sanctorum. It may be the Kailasanatha Temple that is referred to in the inscription.
“This village is situated on an ancient trade route from Madurai to Rameswaram via Manamadurai,” says P.Rajendran, president, PCHR. “This new finding reveals the Sethupathi’s contribution to the Saivite temple at Palaiyanur.

Shops stay shut on Naam Tamizhar Bandh

Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed on Monday, during the bandh called by Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam, to protest against the visit of Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to the country.
Barring a few incidents of smashing the windscreens of four buses, the bandh passed off peacefully without violence. Normal life was not affected despite the closure of shops and business establishments.
While majority of the private educational institutions were closed, medical shops and milk booths functioned as usual. Police personnel were deployed at key junctions and mobile patrols were operated to monitor the trouble makers. Despite the presence of police, shops downed their shutters as they feared some untoward incidents, resulting in loss of property. “Even a stone thrown by an activist could cost us thousands,” said a shop owner of Nehru Street, a shopping hub in the town. Police said 18 activists of the Naam Tahmizhar Iyakkam, launched by film maker Seeman, were arrested as they tried to stage a road blockade.  Government offices, banks and central government institutions functioned normally.
However, people had a tough time reaching their destinations due to shortage of buses and auto rickshaws.  The private buses were off the road. But buses belonging to Puducherry Road Transport Corporation, Tamil Nadu Road Transport Corporation (TNSTC), and State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) plied as usual.
The Naam Thamizhar Iyakkam had called for the bandh as they were opposing the visit of Rajapaksa to Madhya Pradesh .
The activists alleged that the Sri Lankan President was responsible of the killing of thousands of Tamils in the Island nation during the final phase of the Eelam war.

Sivaji-MGR's film together

The 1954 film Koondukkili, directed by T R Ramanna, is the only film in which Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji Ganesan and Makkal Thilagam MGR have shared screenspace.
Also starring B S Saroja in the lead, the film had screenplay and dialogues written by Vindhan, a popular social acivitist and reformer. Despite not faring well at the BO at the time of its release, the film is noted for its star cast and socially-relevant theme!

Mani Ratnam is nearly ready with Kadal

Filmmaker Mani Ratnam has almost wrapped up his dream project Kadal with only few days of shooting left now.
Apparently yesteryear actor Karthik’s son — Gautham Karthik and Radha’s daughter — Thulasi are playing the lead roles in the movie. Though everything about Mani’s films are being done in a hush-hush manner, a close unit hand lets the cat out of the bag about the character Thulasi essays.
According to the source, Thulasi plays a challenging role of a mentally deranged girl similar to what Sri Devi did in Moondram Pirai. It is learnt Mani was awestruck with the way Gautham was performing on the sets.
The movie has a backdrop of Rameswaram fishermen and Gautham portrays the son of a fisherman.
The film which has Rajiv Menon behind the camera has already been bought for Rs 25 crores by Gemini Films. Apparently, the combo of Mani and music director A.R. Rahman has already created huge musical expectations.

Sri Lankan pilgrims attacked near Tiruchirapalli airport

A group of pilgrims from Sri Lanka, who had come to Thanjavur to participate in a festival, were attacked near Tiruchirapalli airport on Tuesday 4 September. As per reports, over 200 pilgrims had arrived at Poondi, a village near Thanjavur, to participate in the annual festival at Poondi Madha Basilica, a two-century old place of worship.
On Tuesday, members of Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) raised slogans against the pilgrims' participation in the festival. However, police intervened and later sent the pilgrims in five buses to Tiruchirapalli airport. Members of NTK, a pro-LTTE outfit floated by film director Seeman, pelted stones at the buses carrying the pilgrims. While the buses were damaged, no one was injured in the incident, police sources said. A special flight has been arranged at Tiruchirapalli airport for the pilgrims to go to Colombo.
One of the pilgrims who did not want to be named said that all the pilgrims had valid travel documents. The pilgrims have taken up the matter with the Indian external affairs ministry and Sri Lankan government. However, no cases have been filed against any of the protesters.
Last week, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had ordered deportation of a group of school boys from Sri Lanka, who had come to play friendly football matches. She had also suspended an official of Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority for allowing a match between Chennai Customs Department and the visiting Sri Lankan team. Another Sri Lankan team, which arrived from Colombo on 2 September, was also sent back.
Political parties in Tamil Nadu including the Opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a key ally of the ruling UPA, had been protesting against friendly gestures by India towards Sri Lanka. DMK also demanded that Sri Lankan defence personnel, who were being trained in army camps in India, should be deported immediately, alleging that the Rajapakse government in Sri Lanka had committed a ‘genocide’ of Tamils in the island republic during the war between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE.

Bharathiraja's AKKV Inches Closer to Completion

Bharathiraja is on the verge of wrapping up Anna Kodiyum Kodi Veeranum. This film commenced in a grand manner several months ago and after a lot of changes made to the script, it is finally nearing completion.

The last schedule is currently on and the entire team is eager to get done with the shooting and move over to the post-production.

It may be recalled that Parthiban and then Ameer was roped in to play the hero in this film initially and finally the director decided to cash his son Manoj as Karthika Nair’s hero.

GV Prakash is the music director for this film and Gangai Amaren has penned the lyrics for the songs.

School book dubs Netaji ‘extremist’

A Class 11 textbook approved for government schools in Chhattisgarh has dubbed Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose as an “extremist”, triggering protests from several quarters here. The state government was forced to withdraw the text book following the resentment.
A chapter in “Samajik Bigyan” (social science) text book written in Hindi has been devoted to Netaji, detailing his immense contribution and sacrifice for the freedom movement of India. The chapter also described him as a hero and a great son of India.
However, one sentence in the chapter (page. no 103) made an “objectionable” reference to him, saying, “Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Ugrabadi the” (Netaji Subash Chandra Bose was an extremist), shocking the intellectuals and senior citizens here.
Exposing the “faux pas” on Wednesday, Chhattisgarh Kalibari Samiti, a body of Bengali-speaking people of the state, has taken strong exception to showing Netaji in such a poor light in the text book.
“It is an insult to Netaji, a worthy son of India. We demand strong action against authorities responsible for the gaffe and immediate measures by the government to remove the objectionable sentence”, Rajendra Banerjee, secretary of the samiti said here.

Workers want revival of granite units

A large number of workers from the granite industry assembled near the Collector’s office here on Wednesday, with their families, demanding government intervention and immediate restoration of the functioning of the industry.
The unannounced stir came as a shock as the agitators had not obtained permission, a police officer at the Collectorate said. The All India Forward Bloc Usilampatti MLA, Kathiravan, led the agitation.
Circulating a two-page statement to the media persons, the agitators, who squatted on the road, said that the industry had been targeted by some officials and a malicious campaign had been on against their employers.

“We are jobless. Our future is bleak. Our families are in a jeopardy…We have no clue as to what would happen next as the normal functioning of the units have suddenly come to a grinding halt,” they said.
The workers went on to state that the granite industry employed several thousands of workers directly and indirectly in this region. With huge exports, the industry earned foreign exchange for the country and the governments have recognised the performance in the past.
After the units were shut down last month, the workers are facing lot of hardship without employment and some of the marriages that were scheduled got cancelled due to this, the employees charged.
Addressing media persons after submitting the petition, Kathiravan said the district administration has initiated action against the granite quarries and has filed cases. PRP also is ready to face those cases legally. However, it is important that the government should consider reopening the sealed granite units to safeguard the livelihood of the workers depending on the units, he said.
"More than 40,000 people are working in PRP and among them nearly 11,000 are from Usilampatti region. Depending upon the salaries they were drawing from the company, many have admitted their children in schools, took bank loans and other commitments. But now, everything is at stake. Some of the marriages of the employees scheduled in these months were also cancelled on these grounds. Hence, we urge the state government to reopen the granite companies and we believe that chief minister will consider the plight of the workers," he said.
Many of the workers, including women in large number who were emotionally charged, raised slogans against the government stating that false cases are being framed against their owner. Sternly defending PRP, the workers said that none of the complaints filed against him were true. "It is not true that PRP destroyed water bodies or encroached upon government lands. All of the government lands are intact and the water bodies were not touched", said P Manikandan, one of the employees.
"The media is projecting the scrap granite stones as illegally hoarded ones, but in fact, they were rejected by the company which can be used for various other purposes including in green houses announced by the government and schools," he said.
"PRP has provided us with all benefits along with employment and taken care of the employees very well. Sudden closure of these units will drive the youth to take up anti-social elements, so the government should reopen the granite company immediately," said T K Jayakumar, supervisor in PRP.

Two-time legislator and DMK local veteran Khader Basha alias Vellaisamy Thevar (81), who was murdered at his house in Kamuthi on Friday was elected to the assembly from the Mudukulathur constituency once as an independent candidate (1971-76) and the next time on a DMK ticket (1989-90).
He had also served as chairman of Kamudhi panchayat twice and was also elected district panchayat councillor once.
According to police, when the assailant Dhanaseelan of Mela Ramanathi village struck, Vellaisamy’s wife Rukmani rushed to his aid and in the process received bleeding injuries on her hands.
“Dhanaseelan was a regular visitor at Vellaisamy’s house and therefore no one sensed anything amiss when he came today till they heard the former MLA’s screams,” a police officer said.
When Dhanaseelan tried to flee, Vellaisamy’s relatives and aides pounced on him and thrashed him to death.
As news of the former MLA’s death spread, traders in the area downed shutters and schools declared a holiday.
A large number of supporters thronged his house.
Condoling Vellaisamy’s death, Karunanidhi credited the former MLA with strengthening the party organisation in the southern region.
He recalled that Vellaisamy made it a point to call on him (Karunanidhi) whenever he went to Chennai.
Senior police officers including DIG Ramasubramanian and SP Kaliraj Maheshkumar inspected the scene of crime.
While Vellaisamy’s body was sent to the Kamuthi Government Hospital for autopsy, Dhanaseelan’s body was sent to the Aruppukottai Government Hospital.
Former DMK Ministers Suba Thangavelan and Thangam Thennarasu, former MLA Murugvel and others paid homage to the slain politician

'NEP' audio launch: What the 3Bs spoke?

The three big Bs of Tamil cinema - Balachander, Balu Mahendra and Bharathiraja - shared their thoughts on Ilayaraja at the audio launch of 'Neethanae En Ponvasantham' in Chennai on Saturday evening.

In his address, Bharathiraja said no one could beat Ilayaraja in background scores. "Many music composers may come. But no one can beat him. My friendship with Ilayaraja dates back to 40 years. We had fought many a time. But our friendship can't be separated," he said.

Bharathiraja added that Ilayaraja outdid his expectations in the background scores of 'Tick Tick Tick', 'Kadhal Oviyam' and 'Mudhal Mariyadhai'. "He was particular about not repeating his work. And he is doing it till today," Bharathiraja said.

Balachander, who enjoyed the show with child-like enthusiasm, read out his experiences with Ilayaraja.

When asked about his favourite song among those composed by the maestro, KB said his vote was for 'Pooongatru Thirumbuma...' from his good friend Bharathiraja-directed 'Mudhal Mariyadhai'. Balachander, referring to Gautham Vasudev Menon, said the right age to direct love stories was 40 and it was during his 40s he made romantic films such as 'Ek Tujhe Keliye'.

Balu Mahendra said Ilayaraja was so close to his heart than anyone else in the industry.

"When I started a film institute, I invited Ilayaraja alone. He came to light the lamp and to sing a verse. That was enough for me."

Balu Mahendra said Ilayaraja composed music for his all his films, starting his third movie. "I would like to share here that Ilayaraja will compose music for my upcoming film. Even he doesn't know this," Balu Mahendra said, amid thunderous applause.

Temple fete: one caste group can’t prevent another, says HC

People belonging to a particular caste group cannot prevent, create hurdles or lay unreasonable conditions for celebration of temple festivals by those belonging to another caste, the Madras High Court Bench here has said.
Justice K. Chandru made the observation while allowing a writ petition filed by an individual representing the Kammavar Naidu community at T. Karisalkulam in Sivakasi taluk of Virudhunagar district against people belonging to Thevar community and others.
The petitioner had sought the district administration's permission as well as police protection for the Muthalamman Temple festival, celebrated once in five years, by his caste group to the exclusion of Thevars and others on September 5 and 6.
According to him, there was no permanent idol or temple as such in the village for the deity Muthalamman. The Goddess was represented by 13 holy stones and two stages, one at the start point, and another at the end point of the village.
It was only during the temple festival that the villagers create a clay idol of Muthalamman, perform a ritual of opening the eyes of the deity, take it on a procession around the village, and demolish it at the stage in the end point of the village.
The festival was being celebrated jointly by all caste groups since time immemorial. But a problem arose in 2007 when a few people sat on the temple car with their footwear in an inebriated mood and insisted on drawing them too along with the deity.
Agreeing with the submissions made by the petitioner, the Inspector of Vembakottai police station said that there were about 300 Naicker families and 130 Thevar families in the village. He also apprehended law and order problems during the festival this year.
In a counter affidavit, a representative of Thevar community contended that the petitioner's attempt to conduct the festival separately would lead to caste clashes apart from infringing the rights of all caste groups to worship the deity.
Disagreeing with such contentions, the judge said that following customary rituals was a fundamental right under Article 25 of the Constitution. Therefore, neither the petitioner nor his caste group could be prevented from conducting the festival separately. “The revenue and police authorities cannot be mute spectators when disturbances are created by a person or a group when one section of people wants to conduct a temple festival without any hindrance to others,” he concluded.
