Remember Mohan a.k.a. ‘Mike’ Mohan, the super-hit hero throughout the eighties and till mid-nineties? Karnataka-born Mohan starred in more than 70 films as hero in Tamil opposite almost all the leading ladies in the eighties and nineties. His heroines included Poornima Bhagyaraj, Suhasini, Nadhiya, Radha, Amibica, Amala, Sasikala, Nalini, Revathy, Oorvasi and many others.
Mohan survived on ‘dubbed voice’ (of playback singer S.N.Surendhar) who worked for him in almost all his movies barring a couple of them. In fact, Mohan’s ‘own’ voice appeared so alien compared to his on-screen voice of SNS. Though he wasn’t a great actor by any stretch of imagination, all the songs lip-synched by him and sung by SPB mostly in Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s music had gone on to become super-duper hit songs.
Mohan is synonymous with ‘Mike’ as he has played the singer’s role in many films and looks as if he’s born with the mike. After a gap of more than a decade, Mohan made his comeback as hero in a dud titled Suttapazham a few years back. The film didn’t do a great business at the box-office as today’s generation of youths apparently didn’t like a hero who had his voice lent by someone else.
Though he got offers to star in many tele-sterials, he was particular that he would only be playing the lead roles and not sundry ones in films and on the telly. Finally, he has now given his consent to star in an upcoming film which is to be directed by one of the former assistant directors of actor-director S.J. Suriyah. The film is as yet untitled at the time of this news going to thepress.
It may be recalled that Mohan had earlier played to perfection the ‘negative hero’ in the film Nooravadhu Naal in the eighties!
