S J Surya in Pizza 2

The film has Vaibhav of Mankatha and Saroja fame in the lead role. And it also has actor-director S J Suryah in an interesting role.

'Yes, S J Suryah is doing an important role and we are happy to have him on board,' says the film's director Deepan.

Refusing to reveal more details, he says, 'All that I can say is he is doing an interesting role. Because I want to maintain the suspense element.'

SEMBINAATTU MARAVAR

SEMBINAATTU MARAVAR

——————————-

Sembinaadu is a place in Ramanadhapuram which was part of Cholzha Naadu during the Raja Raja Cholzhan period. The place got it’s name through some Pandyan maravar’s who helped the king Cholzha to protect thanjore from the invasion of Pandyans from madurai, while the king was plotting an attack on Srilanka. Since a large group of pandyan maravars helped the king to protect Thanjoore while his away on a war in Srilanka. To honour their gratitude and valour , the king conferred the prestigious Cholzha kingdom pattam which is “Sembiyan” to the these maravar groups first Leader the Sethupathy and their place in Ramanathapuram was called Sembinaadu .

This Sembiyan pattam was only used by the Cholzha kings initially. That day onwards, the maravars who hail from sembinaadu were known as Sembinaattu Maravars or profoundly known as Cholzha maravars. This way new subcaste was born in the Maravar Clan.Today among the maravar it’s known as the highest form of subcaste due to it’s rich history , valour and total strength (population). In ancient days , most of these maravars were part of the pandyan , cholzha and Chera Army. This group of Maravars found predominantly in Ramanathapuram and in the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu, such as Madurai, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Thirunelveli, Thoothukudi and districts of Tamil Nadu. They are also found in central districts of Tamil Nadu like Pudukottai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Tiruchy.

They belong to the Surya Kulam like Esan Naattu Kallars. Unlike Kandayan Kottai Maravar’s Who belongs to the Chandra Kulam as they are known as Pandya Maravars. During the Pandyan Kula Vamsam, the properties were divided among the Sembinaatu Maravars and Kandayan Kottai Maravar’s, where most of the profitable properties went to the hands of KandayanKottai Maravars and due to this Many Pandyan Maravars became the Rich Landlords whereas Cholzha Maravars joined the Military of Cholzha , Chera and Pandyan. Many during the 18th and 19th centuries, most of the Sembinaattu Maravars were assimilated into the Tamil Padam Nair subcaste of the Nair community. The Maravar regiment of the Travancore army was known as “Maravar Padai”, which supplemented Nair Pattalam, the larger indigenous military unit. Tamil Padam Nair is recognized as a part of the Malayala Kshatriya social grouping.

Addition to this, it was standard rule those days, where no intercaste marriage was not allowed between Sembinaattu Maravars and Esan Naattu Kallars. Since it was considered as incest but today it is not practiced widely anymore. Another highlight of this subcaste is that, the udan Kattai eruthal(meaning entering into pyre along with the dead husband) is practiced widely in this community( this practice was temporarily abolished during the period of Maaravarman Sundarapaandiyan in 12th century). After the demise of Maravarman Sundarapandiyan the practice resumed back. During the british invasion, this practice was abolished completely in 1829.

Another Interesting Information about Sembinaattu Maravars are, Most of the Sethubathy’s Of Ramnad belong to the this subcaste of maravar. Even today since Sembinaattu Maravar’s Kilai are maternal, it is said that when the sethupathi’s dies without a legitimate son, the the throne goes to his sister’s son (same kilai as him). The most preffered Kilai for Throne is the Thanichha Kilai (one of the Kilai practiced in the Sembinaatu Maravar Clan.

For most of them the Pattam is “Thevar” but some uses other pattams like Nattar, Rayar,Pandiyar,Sembiyan and Thennavan.

The Kilai System practiced in this Subcaste :-

Kilai system ((branches)

*The Killai is inherited from mother. So a boy or girl will not marry in their same Killai. It is assumed that they are brother & sister.

Such a practice is no longer prevailing amongst other maravars.

a) Seetha Ramar Maravar Kilai

b) Nalu Kottai Maravar kilai

c) Katra Maravar kilai

d) Marikka maravar kilai

e) Picha Maravar kilai

f) Thondaiman Maravar kilai

g) Thanicha Maravar kilai

h) Karuputhra Maravar kilai

i) Karana Maravar

j) Nalukottai Maravar (most of the sethubathy’s belongs to this kilai)

Master of character roles Manivannan passes away

Actor and director Manivannan, who enlivened many Tamil films in the last two decades in character roles laced with comedy, died of a heart attack at his residence in Chennai on Saturday. He was 58. He is survived by his wife, daughter and son.

R. Manivannan

In a career spanning three decades, Manivannan went from being a story and dialogue writer for veteran director Bharathiraja to a successful director who thrived in experimenting with different genres, before becoming an actor who quite literally appeared in every second movie at the box office. It was only in the last three to four years that his health slowed him down. His career spanned over 400 movie credits as an actor and 50 as a director.

His 50th directorial venture ‘Nagaraja Cholan M.A., MLA,’ released last month to lukewarm response at the box office. He had finished acting in a few movies that are in various stages of post-production work. ‘Nagaraja Cholan M.A., MLA’ was in the same mould as his box office hit ‘Amaidhipadai’ (1994), starring close friend and actor Sathyaraj.

As an actor, the rustic looking Manivannan played mostly negative and comic roles. His strength was his dialogue delivery, which he admitted in various interviews was heavily influenced by veteran actor M.R.Radha. In a television interview, Manivannan said he considered himself a cultural heir of Radha, whom he also admired for his atheistic views.

An outspoken political activist, who did not think twice while taking on political and film industry bigwigs in public forums, Manivannan was a supporter of Tamil causes. He was also briefly a member of the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

On Saturday, his body was kept in his residence at Nesappakam, where leading film industry personalities and politicians paid their respects.

In his condolence message, DMK chief M.Karunanidhi recalled that Manivannan had directed the 1986 film ‘Palaivana Rojakkal,’ for which he wrote the script. “A talented person has left us all too suddenly,” he noted.

Director to actor

Manivannan’s three-decade long film career could be split down the middle: the first 15 years as a technician – director, script and dialogue writer; and the next 15 mostly as a character actor.

As a director, he made movies in different genres – from romance to thriller to drama – often ensuring that no successive films of his belonged to the same genre. His most brilliant successes came from casting unlikely actors in negative roles: actor Mohan was known mostly for his romantic movies before he was cast as a psychopath killer in ‘Nooravathu Naal’; and Sathyaraj had only just gone on transitioned from negative roles to hero, when he cast him as Amavasai, a lowly political worker who uses guile to climb the rungs of power in the State in the film ‘Amaidhi Padai’ (1994), which has set the standards for political satire in Tamil cinema. The film proved a smash hit and benefited Manivannan the actor, as he had cast himself as a sidekick to the ambitious and street-smart protagonist.

As an actor, Manivannan is best remembered for his role as the tongue-in-cheek aide to the Chief Minister in Shankar’s “Mudhalvan,” the bumbling landlord in “Avvai Shanmugi” and his twin act in Sunder C’s “Ullathai Allithaa” as the millionaire Vishwanathan and the villainous Kasinathan.

Manivannan, whose assistants include Vikraman, Sundar C, R K Selvamani and Seeman, too went on to become successful filmmakers. He was known off screen as a follower of Marxist and Periyar ideology and spreading them through his firebrand speeches in political meets. He was also a supporter of Tamil Eelam.

Kolathur Mani, founder of Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, recalled Manivannan as a nationalist and a communist who spread the views of the movement among the public. “He used his popularity in films to put forward the views of the movement to the public in political meets and not to gain any party post,” he said.

Mani also recalled a couple of instances when Manivannan volunteered himself to be part of his party’s meet and gave a speech in Coimbatore though he was not invited and had come to know about the event through wall posters. “During a conference at Tirupur, it was raining heavily but he continued to sit through even though he was not keeping well. He was a man of simplicity,” Mani said.

Prof A Marx, activist, said Manivannan was not only a well-read, lover of Tamil language and a follower of Marxist, Mao and Periyar ideologies but was also in charge in the district level in a communist movement before he made it big in films. “He was a voracious reader,” Marx said.

Manivannan started his career as an assistant with well known director Bharathi Raja and in 1982 directed his first movie 'Gopurangal Saivathillai'.

He also acted as a villain in 'Kodi Parakkuthu' directed by Bharathi Raja, which had superstar Rajnikant playing hero.

His friendship with actor Sathiyaraj translated to several memorable moments on screen. Manivannan was known to be a voracious reader of books and along with Sathyaraj epitomised on screen what is colloquially known in Tamil as ‘nakkal’ (snideness).

Equation with ‘guru’ Bharathiraja

At many public forums, Manivannan has credited director Bharathiraja for teaching him the various facets of film-making. Bharathiraja had introduced Manivannan as a story and dialogue writer in his 1980 film ‘Nizhalgal’ that sunk at the box office despite its compelling story, music and performances. The follow up to that was ‘Alaigal Oiyvathillai’ the next year, which fetched awards both to Bharathiraja and Manivannan.

However, the two have had a very public falling out in recent years over political and personal reasons, and have both used public forums to hit out at each other. But in an emotional interview to FM radio station Radio City just a few days ago, Manivannan sought Bharathiraja’s forgiveness for all misgivings and insisted that no matter what he would always remain “Bharathiraja’s assistant”.

Actor Prabhu in Coimbatore Thoor Vaarum Thiruvizha

Actor Prabhu a volunteer have taken part in ‘Thoor Vaarum Thiruvizha’, the citizens’ initiative to desilt the big tank at ukkadam Coimbatore.

2

The dry, black tank bed in the Big Tank turned into a stage for celebration on Sunday morning, as hundreds of people joins their hand together for de-silting efforts. With the permission of the district administration, the Residents Awareness Association of Coimbatore, Siruthuli and a number of organisations had cleaned the Tank on last four Sundays to increase its storage capacity.

The 700-year-old tank is sized over 320 acres and the last desilting process would have been done several decades back before many generations.

The young, the middle aged and old were there in equal measure here. They took part as equal. While able-bodied men filled earth in tubs, the others who were there passed on the filled-in tubs to dump the earth to strengthen the bunds.

Parallel rows of men, women and children would pass on the empty tubs to the men for refill. Such a marvelous live team work happens.

The work had helped increase the Tank’s capacity by 20 per cent to 50 per cent,Its a good time and good palace to work for a good cause…!
