Sellur gets overbridge after 8 yrs

Madurai, Jan. 22: The rail over bridge constructed at a cost of `29 crore at Sellur in the city was inaugurated on Saturday. Union minister and Madurai MP M.K.Alagiri opened the bridge in the presence of collector C.Kamaraj and Madurai West MLA K.S.K.Rajendran.

The implementation of the long-pending project, the works for which began way back in 2003, was one of the poll promises of Mr Alagiri. A joint exercise by the state highways and the southern railway, the new bridge over Thathaneri railway gate on the Palam station road between Sellur and Aruldosspuram is expected to ease traffic congestion during the times of closure of the railway gate at Sellur.

For the motorists, office and college-goers, it has been a terrible experience to wait for over 15 minutes in the peak morning and evening hours when the railway gate is closed. Now that, it has been thrown open for public use, the road-users can heave a sigh of relief, officials said.

However, the traffic police stress the need for another bridge across the Vaigai connecting north and south Madurai to find a permanent solution to the traffic menace as the vehicles using the new Sellur bridge would get crammed at the traffic signals near the Jain Vidyalaya school and the Thevar statue junction at Goripalayam causing snarls.

The Sellur bridge boasts of 942 m length and 11 m breadth.

Its height is double the height of a normal overbridge and has been constructed using modern technology, officials said.

அ.தி.மு.க. அணியில் கார்த்திக் கட்சி

CHENNAI : AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday said actor Karthik's Indiya Nadalum Makkal Katchi would be part of the AIADMK alliance in the forthcoming assembly polls. She told mediapersons that talks were progressing with other parties who were likely to join her front and added that it would be revealed as and when deals were struck.

Asked whether the AIADMK had shut the doors to the Congress as she had been criticising the central government, especially on the 2G spectrum scam of late, she sought to clarify that the AIADMK had criticised the central government whenever it had acted against the interests of the public. "It has nothing to do with electoral alliances," she maintained.

She went on to clarify that she had never said the AIADMK had an alliance with the Congress. But reminded about her earlier offer to the Congress that she will provide them support of 18 MPs if it ditched the DMK, she chose to skirt the issue.

She also refused to comment on whether the DMDK would find a place in the AIADMK alliance.

Asked about the outcome of her recent talks with actor Vijay's father, she said the question should have been posed to the latter.

She said the DMK government's distribution of freebies would not yield the ruling party votes. "All that will not work," she said adding that people were fed up with the present government.

Listing out problems like deteriorating law and order, illegal sand mining and power crisis, she said there were several issues concerning the electorate. She said the AIADMK, Left parties and Telugu Desam Party would launch a nation-wide agitation against increase in price of petrol.

She also flayed Union minister Kapil Sibal's recent criticism of the CAG report on the 2G scam. "It is against the Constitution. It is also contempt of court as the case is pending in the court and the CBI inquiry is conducted based on the CAG report."

KARTHIK TO SUPPORTAIADMK

Veteran actor Karthik, who featured in films like Agni Natchathiram, Varusham 16, Ullathai Alli Thaa and Amaren, will campaign for the AIADMK. The actor is all set to begin his campaign in support of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalitha and the AIADMK very soon.

Karthik, who heads the political party AINMK, has said that he and his supporters would vociferously support the AIADMK and ensure that it is restored to power in the state.

DMK loses Raja berth

Chennai, Jan. 19: The new cabinet has no DMK replacement for A. Raja, hardly a surprise to anyone, though the southern party’s sources said M. Karunanidhi preferred not to spar over portfolios and concentrate on ties with the Congress before state elections.

The Karunanidhi-led party had hoped to quickly fill the telecom ministry vacancy in November after Raja was forced to resign because of the 2G scandal, but the Congress gave the berth to one of its own, HRD minister Kapil Sibal.

The DMK, which is the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, was apparently politely told that its turn would come in the next shuffle but that did not happen today.

“The last time when the DMK talked of ministries and portfolios… it had not painted a rosy picture of the party. So by not seeking to fill the vacancy, Karunanidhi is trying to give an impression that he is not after ministries at the Centre. It’s a clever effort to limit the damage caused by the Raja-Radia tapes episode,” a Congress MP said.

Speculation that the DMK’s T.R. Baalu would find a berth did the rounds in the reshuffle run-up but sources said the party chose to let this round of appointments pass by. They cited several reasons, from internal pulls and pressures to focusing on the tie-up with the Congress ahead of the May Assembly elections.

Baalu is believed to have conveyed to UPA chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the last few days that the DMK would not nominate anyone.

“The internal pulls and pressures for that one post were too much for our leader to handle. Baalu was keen to get back into the cabinet but having played the Dalit card while defending Raja, it would not have been politically wise to replace him with a Thevar, which Baalu is. A.K. Vijayan, the other Dalit MP, is too inexperienced to be made a cabinet minister. Also, Alagiri (Karunanidhi’s eldest son and a Union minister) is not keen on Baalu at this stage,” a senior DMK MP said.

That Prime Minister Singh had opposed Baalu’s candidature in 2009 could have also played a part.

Karunanidhi chose the safer option of not naming anyone and concentrating all his energies on firming up the alliance with the Congress, a source said.

Karunanidhi is scheduled to visit Delhi later this month and discuss seat-sharing for the Assembly elections with Sonia Gandhi.

The then Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, set up a one-man commission headed by Justice M.C.Chagla to investigate the matter when it becomes evident that there was a prima facie case. Chagla concluded that Mundhra had sold fictitious shares to LIC, thereby defrauding the insurance behemoth to the tune of Rs. 1.25 crore. Mundhra was sentenced to 22 years in prison. The scam also forced the resignation of T.T.Krishnamachari.

6, Teja Loans (1960):- Shipping magnate Jayant Dharma Teja took loans worth Rs 22 crore to establish the Jayanti Shipping Company. In 1960, the authorities discovered that he was actually siphoning off money to his own account, after which Teja fled the country.

20, MS SHOES SCAM (1994) :- Anyone who war old enough in 1994 to read will remember the advertisements- tens of them intriguingly headlined: 'Who is Pawan Sachdeva?' For the record, it was the peak of the public issued-led advertising boom and the ads were created by the Delhi branch of Rediffusion. Sachdeva, the promoter of MS Shoes, allegedly used company funds to buy shares (of his own company) and rig prices, prior to a public issue. He is alleged to have colluded with officials in the Securities Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and SBI Caps, which lead-managed the issue, to dupe the public into investing in his Rs. 699-crore public-***-rights issue. 25, Urea Deal (1996) :- C.S. Ramakrishnan, MD, National Fertiliser, and a group of businessmen close to the P.V. Narasimha Rao regime fleeced the government and took Rs 133 crore from the import of two lakh tonne of urea, which was never delivered.

26, Hawala Diaries (1996) :- The scandal surfaced following CBI raids on hawala operators in Delhi in 1991. But it was S.K. Jain's diaries that had heads rolling.

27, CRB SCAM (1997) :- Another scam forged by greed and discovered through accident. Chain Roop Bhansali, a smart-talking entrepreneur, created a pyramid financial empire based on high-cost financing. At its peak, his Rs. 1,000-crore financial conglomerate had in its ranks a mutual fund, a financial services company into fixed deposits, and a merchant bank. That Bhansali knew how to work the system became evident when he also managed to secure a provisional banking license. Then his luck ran out. An executive in the State Bank of India Inadvertently discovered that some interest warrants issued by Bhansali were not backed by cash. The bubble finally burst in May 1997, but by that time investors had lost over Rs. 1,000 crore. This was among the first retail scams in India and it was played out, in smaller avatars, across the country-especially in the South where financial services companies promised returns in excess of 20 per cent and decamped with the principal. Bhansali was arrested for a few weeks and released later on bail.

28, MEHTA'S SECOND COMING (1998) :- The Big Bull returned to the bourses. This time, he allegedly colluded with the promoters of BPL, Videocon International, and Sterile Industries to rig the share prices of these companies. The inevitable collapse happened sooner than planned, Harshad Mehta orchestrated a cover-up operation that included a high=jinks effort by officials of Bombay Stock Exchange to (illegally ) open the trading system in the middle of the night to set things right, but the damage had been done. SEBI finally passed its ruling on the scam in 2001, banning the three companies concerned from tapping the market-BPL, for two years. Mehta was debarred for life form dealing in Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) in October 2001

29, VANISHING COMPANIES SCAM (1998) :- A passing remark heard by then Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram resulted in a furore over what was badly-kept secret on Dalal street. Chidambaram was told that hundreds of companies had disappeared after raising moneys form the public. An informal scrutiny revealed that perhaps over 600 companies were missing. Chidambaram ordered a probe by SEBI. The SEBI probe conducted in May 1998 revealed that while many companies are not traded on the bourses at least 80 companies that had rises Rs.330.78 crore were simply missing. Later that year, the Department of Company Affairs (DCA) was asked to probe and penalize these companies. DCA still investigating. Investigations continue to this day.

30, PLANTATION COMPANIES SCAM (1999) :- It was as innovative a swindle as any effected in the world. Savvy entrepreneurs convinced gullible investors that given the right irrigation and fertilizer inputs, teak, strawberries, and anything else that could be grown, would grow anywhere in the country. The promoters could afford to collect money from investors and not worry about retribution (or returns, for that matter). For, plantation companies fell under the purview of neither SEBI nor Reserve Bank of India. Indeed, they didn't even come under the scope of the Department decided to change things in 1999, enough investors had been gulled: 653 companies, between them, had raised Rs. 2,563 crore from investors. To date, not many investors have got their principals back, just another affirmation of the old saying about money not growing on trees.

31, Match Fixing (2000) :- Mohammed Azharuddin, till then India's cricket captain, was accused of match-fixing. He and Ajay Sharma were banned from playing, while Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar were suspended for five years.

32, KETAN PAREKH SCAM (2001) :- Ketan Parekh's modus operandi wasn't very different from Harshad Mehta's. If Mehta used banker's receipts, then Parekh used pay orders to ramp up the prices of his favourite scrips (the K-10). Apart from money form the banking system Parekh also rerouted money from corporated like HFCL (Rs. 425 crore), and Zee (Rs. 340 crore) to good effect. He was caught when pay-orders issued by Madhavpura Mercantile Cooperative Bank bounced. Although the total amount involved in the scam was just Rs. 137 crore, the impact was far greater.

Apparently, when a bear cartel sensed Parekh was in trouble, it stepped in and leveraged a dip in the NASDAQ to bear down stock prices. The resultant slump in the markets happened soon after Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha presented what he considered his best budget ever. Under pressure from the government, SEBI investigated the scam and heads began to roll. Among them: the entire management team of BSE, including its president Anand Rathi, CSFB, First Global, and, in an indirect connection, P.S.Subramanyam, the Chairman of UTL Evidently, for the 18 months that PSS was Chairman of UTI, the Trust had mirrored the actions of the bull cartel. The result? When the market tanked, so did the NAV of its holy cow, the US-64.

33, Tehelka Sting (2001) :- Tehelka, an online news portal, used spycams to catch army officers and politicians accepting bribes, in their sting operation called Operation Westend. Investigative journalism turned another corner in the country.

34, Stockmarket Scam (2001) :- The mayhem that wiped off over Rs 1,15,000 crore in the markets in March 2001 was masterminded by the Pentafour bull Ketan Parekh. He was arrested in December 2002 and banned from acccessing the capital market for 14 years.

35, Home Trade Scam (2002) :- Under the pretext of gilt trading, Rs 600 crore was swindled from over 25 cooperative banks in Maharashtra and Gujarat by a Navi Mumbai-based brokerage firm Home Trade. Sanjay Agarwal, CEO of the firm, was arrested in May 2002.

36, Stamp Paper Scam (2003) :- The sheer magnitude of the racket was shocking-it caused a loss of Rs 30,000 crore to the exchequer. Disclosures of the mastermind behind it, Abdul Karim Telgi, implicated top police officers and bureaucrats.

37, Oil-for-Food Scandal (2005) :- K. Natwar Singh was unceremoniously dropped from the Cabinet when his name surfaced in the Volcker Report on the Iraq oil-for-food scam.

Mukkulathor

The Thevar people (Thevar literally meaning "celestial beings divine natured-people in Sanskrit")http://books.google.com/books?id=N1Q_TdiGzVIC&pg=PA11&dq=thevar+descended&cd=6#v=onepage&q=thevar%20descended&f=false collectively forms the Mukkulathor (meaning: people of the three clans). native to the Southern districts of Tamil Nadu The name "Mukkulathor" alludes to the three roughly designated groups, Agamudaiyar, Kallar,
Maravar which make up this large endogamous social group.Thevars are warriors and vikings of Tamil nadu. Kallar and Maravar were inhabitants of the Palai region during the Sangam period. The literature during the Sangam period divided the regions based on climate and topography. Palai was mainly a desert-like region with little to no rain.

Nowadays, Mukkulathors are found all over the southern districts of Tamil Nadu. There is also a small community in Chattisgarh where they migrated to during British rule. The Royal houses of Sivagangai, Ramnad and Pudukkottai all belong to the Mukkulathor

Maravar

Maravar (Tamil: மறவர்) also "Maravan" (meaning "Grateful Warrior") are one of the oldest social groups to be mentioned by the Sangam Tamil literature[14]. This indicates an association with the Tamil land which is at least 2,000 years old. The writers of the Sangam Age place them in rural settlements withdrawn from cities. Maravars are the courageous breed and were involved in the major wars that Tamilnadu witnessed. The Kingdom of Ramnad was a Maravar kingdom and was ruled by the Setupati kings[15]. Ramanathapuram , Sivagangai and Singampatti Zamin of thirunelveli are Maravars strongholds from ancient times.

Maravars are courageous breed and were involved in almost all the major battles and wars that ancient Tamilnadu witnessed. Maravars are found predominantly in the Southern districts of Tamilnadu viz., Madurai, Theni, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Dindigul, Virudhunagar, Thirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari districts of Tamil Nadu. They ruled the vast land mass of Tamilnadu along with the coastal rulers,Paravars. Both these tribes seems to have common origin,Tamil nagas. The Southern martial arts of Kalarippayattu, Silambam, Varma Kalai have been practiced primarily by Kallars, Thevars,Parathavars and Villavars of erstwhile Travancore areas.

The Maravar have close relation with Kalabhars even though they Maravars are a non-aryan, non-Kalabhar group.Another aristocratic caste called Paravars are akin to Maravars. They were ancient rulers of Pandya kingdom of coastal land and inland from the First Sangam Tamil age. Their leaders were given the title "Meenavan" and "Pandyan" respectively. Edgar Thurston (1855–1935) a British museologist and ethnographer identified the use of the boomerang by Kallars and Maravars of South India.

Large number of Maravars served in the armies of many princely states of Kerala. But during the 18th and 19th centuries, most of them were assimilated in to the Tamil Padam Nair subcaste of the Nair community. The Maravar regiment of the Travancore army was known as "Maravar Padai", which supplemented Nair Pattalam, the larger indigenous military unit.[16] Tamil Padam Nair is recognized as a part of the Malayala Kshatriya social grouping. The Ramnad Zamindar's are accorded the title Sethupathi (protector of the Sethu bridge) even to this day.

Pandiyan Dynasty

Historians postulate that Pandians are Maravar. The discovery of Indian copper plate inscriptions provided a relative abundance of new evidence for use in evolving a chronicle of India's elusive history.Till date Singampatti,Thenkasi and Kayathar, which are the last royal houses of pandians are dominated by Maravars.

Sub-divisions

There are 2 major subdivisions among the Maravar community. One is Appa Nattu Kondyankottai Maravar and another one is Chembiya Nattu Maravar. The Kondyan Kottai Maravars are related to the Vellalars and are still maintaining Killai(branches) as their sub sects. The Killai is inherited from mother. So a boy or girl will not marry in their same Killai. It is assumed that they are brother & sister. Such a practice is no longer prevailing amongst other maravars. The married women of kondyankottai maravers wear "Thali" (Thirumangalyam) in the shape of Shiva lingam. So it is called "Linga Thali". Most of the Tamil castes wear the same type of "Linga Thali".

Kondaynkottai Maravar

Most of the Polygars (palayakkarar) who ruled Southern Tamilnadu as part of the Madurai Nayak dynasty and into the Colonial rule were Kondayankottai Maravars . One of them was Puli Thevar.

The Chembiya Nattu Maravars are Surya vamsam[citation needed]. They are historically from Thanjavur. Kondayan kottai maravars women were having habits of maruthalli. But Chembiya Nattu Maravars women were having habit of Udankattai yeruthal (Sati which is now banned and hence not in practise).

Kallar (caste)

Kallar (Tamil: கள்ளர்) are one of the three related castes which constitute the Mukkulathor confederacy. The community shows many signs of independence and non-submission to any form of subjugation. They strongly resisted every British attempt to subjugate them. Kallars are found largely in the Thanjavur, Trichy, Pudukkottai, Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Karur and Kanchipuram districts of Tamil Nadu. Significant Kallar populations are also found in Srilanka, Malaysia and other south east Asian countries. The Royal House of Pudukottai belongs to the Kallar community.

Meaning of Kallar

Kallar means "brave people". Historians like Srinivasa Iyengar, Venkataswmy Nattar postulate the word Kallar, derived from Kalla, means "black" in Sanskrit and Tamil. (கள்வனென் கிளவி கரியோனென்ப' - திவாகரம்) They also postulate Dravidians were called Kalla by Aryans. The name Thirumal (Mal Means black) also Derived from Black..

Mukkulathor

Kallar are one of the castes in the Mukkulathor (meaning three clans) community. The other two are Maravar and Agamudayar and together they are called Thevar. The royal title "Thevar/Devar" means Divine. In olden days the people viewed kings as a representation of Gods and were accorded titles of respect..

Surnames

In Tamil Nadu, Kallars are called by various surnames, which came to them during various times by the places they have ruled, battlefields and to state their strong valour and bravery in the battle with foreign forces. It is a general practice in Southern Tamil Nadu to address a Thevar woman as Nachiyar. .

YDNA

Some members belong to the first migrant lineages to the subcontinent dating 70,000 years back. Virumandi Andithevar from piramali kallar community in Jothimanickam village belongs to Y chromosome marker M130 (Haplogroup C). C .

Kallar’s community also has members from recent indo-european migrant lineages Y chromosome marker M17 (Haplogroup R1a). r1a-YDNA
Majority of Kallars seems to belong to marker M20 (Haplogroup L, that is primary found in Dravidian language speakers ). L

Sangam Age

Kallar, along with Maravar, are one of the ancient clans mentioned in the Sangam literature. The literature from the first Tamil Sangam period is dated around the last centuries of the pre-Christian era.

Pallavas

The word Pallava (Tamil: பல்லவர்) means branch in Sanskrit, denoting that they are a later offshoot (Kilai) of Cholas. The Pallava kingdom was a medieval Dravidian Tamil dynasty of South India that had its capital at Kanchipuram and ruled Northern Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh (till Northern Circars) around the 4th century CE.

They rose in power during the reign of Mahendravarman I (571 – 630 CE) and Narasimhavarman I (630 – 668 CE) and dominated the Andhra Pradesh and Northern parts of Tamil Nadu for about six hundred years until the end of the 9th century.

"Pallava" is rendered as Tondaiyar in the Tamil language. The Pallava kings at several places are called Thondamans or Thondaiyarkon. The territory of the Pallavas was known as Tundaka Visaya or Tundaka Rashtra. The Sanskrit meaning of Pallava is Kilai The Tamil Thondai means the same, it shows that Pallavas are descendants (Kilay or Pirivu) of Cholas.

Pathupattu, one of the Sangam literatures, reads that the King Thondaiman Ilandirayan ruled this town around 2,500 years ago. The Pallavas are told as the descendents of Thondaiman Ilandirayan.

They were also called by surnames like Sethurayar, Pallavarayar, Vandarayar, Kadurayar, Vallavarayar, Vanathirayar, Kaliyarayar..

Link With Pandiyan

Historians postulate that Pandians are Maravar but some Pandiyan kings were Kallar.
A Pandiyan king was mentioned as Kallar Perumagan Thennavan. Also the bulk of Kallar warriors were serving in the Pandian army.

After the end of Pandian Rule, then Pandi nadu, also known as Kallar nadu, Was ruled by Kallar Ambalakkarrars.

Link With Cheras

The title Servaikkarar, used by Mukkulathors and derived from Chera Avaikkarar,
means people who served in Chera avai.

Once Chera country was ruled by eight Chera kings who combined their armies and chose one king to lead them. Avai is known as Enperayam or Chera Avai..

People belonging to Cheraavai are called Cheravaikkarar or Servaikkarar. One of the famous kings with this title, Maruthu Pandiyar Servaikkarar, belongs to Agamudaiyar.

Tamil copper-plate inscriptions

The discovery of Indian copper plate inscriptions provided a relative abundance of new evidence for use in evolving a chronicle of India's elusive history.

During Chola rule there were many small kings(Araiyar) ruling there respective areas under the Chola. Some of the names are seen in Tamil copper-plate inscriptions are also mentioned in Ponniyin Selvan (a Tamil historical novel written by Kalki Krishnamurthy)

Historical evidences proves that the Chola, Pandya and Pallava Kings were from the Kallar community.

During Vijayanagar Empire

The downfall of the Mukkulathors occurred in 1345 with the fall of Vira Pandyan IV and the subsequent conquest of Madurai by the Delhi Sultanate However, the southern territories of the Sultanate soon asserted their independence and the Mukkulathors recovered under the Vijayanagar Empire and later under the Nayak dynasty during whose period they served as Polygars or chieftains.

The south-western parts of Tamil Nadu except for Kongu Nadu was called Kallar Nadu and was governed by Kallar Palayakkarar.

Agamudayar

Agamudayar(Tamil: அகமுடையார்)

The word Agamudaiyan or Ahamudaiyan is derived from the root Aham which in Tamil means Land and
or House. Signifying that Agamudaiyars are Landlords and Householders; the suffix Udaiyar
indicates ownership. The word is also used in another form, Ahampadiyar, derived from another
meaning of the same root, i.e., inside. And, in this derivation, it signifies a meaning of a
particular profession, whose office it was to attend to the business in the Interior's of the
King's Palace or in the Pagoda". The name," Mr. J. H. Nelson writes, "is said by the Rev. G. U.
Pope, in his edition of the Abbe Dubois' work to be derived from aham, a temple, and padi, a step,
and to have been given to them in consequence of their serving about the steps of temples. But,
independently of the fact that Madura pagodas are not approached by flights of steps, this seems
to be a very far-fetched and improbable derivation of the word. Or, perhaps, the name comes from
aham in the sense of earth, and pati, master or possessor."

In Tamilnadu south districts, Agamudayars are famously known by their title Servaikaaran(servai)in Pandiya nadu. They make expert soldiers, warriors and constituted the bulk of chola & Pandya armies.
Agamudayars are famously known by their title Servai - "A community show many signs of independence and non-submission to any form of subjugation".In South districts the legendary Marudhu Brothers' came from the Agamudayar (Servai) community.Father of maruthu brothers, who worked as a minister in sivagangai force(samasthanam).Famous wordings of maruthu pandiyars " Engalukku Paaya Theriyum Pathunga Theriyum Aanal Bayapada Theriyaadhu " when 29 April 1789, the British forces attacked Kollangudi. It was defeated by a large body of Marudhu.'It is said that the Marudhu brothers could kill a tiger without using any weapons'british forces afraid of maruthu brothers for their bravery attack using the "Valari"- a weapon closely resembling a boomerang. The lands the community owns are actually rewarded for their loyal and valuable service rendered for the cause of the Kings and the nation.

The Agamudayars are largely found in the Southern and Central districts of Pudukkottai, Trichy, Sivagangai, Ramanathapuram, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur (In Taluks of Mannargudi, Vedharanyam and Mayiladuthurai the large group of Agamudayars are found ), Nagapattinam, Madurai, Coimbatore and North and South Arcot districts & Also in Karnataka state Hiriyur Taluk, Aranakatte & Maskal matti where Agamudayars are living in large groups.
The Agamudayars Sub-sects & Titles:
Agamudayar including Thozhu or Thuluva Vellalars are related to Vellalars of ancient Tamilakam.

Film producers come to blows after meeting

CHENNAI: A meeting of the Tamil Film Producer's Council on Sunday ended on a stormy note as two groups owing allegiance to different political parties fought. The council meeting held in the Film chambers theatre in Chennai passed 15 resolutions including one urging the state government to cancel licenses of theatres that charged more than the rate mandated by the government. But the skirmish started when producer S B Muthu Bharathi of Velu Thevar films banner accused the DMK government of not allotting free land for the film fraternity. The land for the Film Employees Federation of South India for a township has been given on lease by the government, he said. Angry DMK supporters among the audience shouted down Bharathi and demanded that officials ask him to leave the meeting.

Bharathi later told TOI that he was assaulted by Producer R Iyappan of Yogesh Films and his supporters.

Muthu Bharathi said the state government had allotted 90 acres land on a 99-year lease to construct houses for film industry workers. This was not acceptable as they would have to return the land to the government after the lease expired. He also alleged that the producers' council availed bank loan for construction of houses and "favoured " certain people. "When I spoke about this at the meeting others objected. I was beaten up later outside the meeting venue," he said. Producers' council president Rama Narayanan denied the charges and said tenders would be invited first for construction before allotment of the houses.

Bharathi said some of the producers, who ran television channels as well, had an advantage over others. "The frequent advertisements of their films in television channels help them. But small producers suffer," he said.

Ayyappan denied that he had physically assaulted Bharathi who threatened to hold an agitation to protest the "attitude" of some of the members of the council. EOM
