Feb.17: The Opposition AIADMK is making rapid progress in finalising seat sharing agreement with its allies. On Thursday, the party allotted a seat to the All-India Moovendar Munnani Kazhagam. Once the agreement is clinched with the Left parties and MDMK, and the talks with DMDK conclude, the AIADMK camp will launch its campaign for the coming Assembly elections — possibly ahead of rival DMK. Negotiations with the actor-politician Vijayakanth-led DMDK are in the final stages and AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa is likely to announce the tie-up in a day or two.
“There is a minor hitch in resolving the number of seats to be allotted to DMDK, but it will be settled soon,” a party insider said. The AIADMK had on February 15 reached seat-sharing agreement with two Dalit parties, the Puthiya Tamizhagam and Republican Party of India, allotting two seats to PT, headed by K. Krishnasamy and one to RPI, led by former legislator S.K. Tamizharasan.
N. Sethuraman, founder-president of AIMMK, which has a strong Thevar base, signed the agreement with Ms Jayalalithaa at her Poes Garden residence. Ms Jayalalithaa discussed the party’s poll plank with office bearers of her party at her residence after Madras HC Advocates Association president R.C. Paul Kanakaraj joined the AIADMK.
