And now a Marxist critique of Vairamuthu’s works

"Though I have been at the receiving end of both forms, this work is a scientific critique. Marxism has paved way for scientific approach of critique rather than criticism" said famous poet and lyricist R.Vairamuthu
It has been forty years since my first work Vaigarai Megangal came out in 1972 and I am happy that it is now that a Marxist view of my works has been published, said famous poet and lyricist R.Vairamuthu.
Delivering the special address at the release of a book titled ‘Valarum Sigaram (Growing Peak) Vairamuthu’ written by Arunan of Tamil Nadu Progressive Writers and Artist’s Association, on Sunday in Madurai, he said, “after a long time I am seeing a true critique of my work.”
Valarum Sigaram, authored by Arunan and published by Kavya Publishers, is a critique on the works of Vairamuthu who has 38 books to his credit ranging from novels, poems, prose, travelogue and compilation of his film song lyrics.
A pensive Vairamuthu talked a lot about modes of criticism which he termed as ‘shaping criticism’ and ‘destroying criticism’.
Though not sarcastic, Vairamuthu subtly put across that it was a bird’s eye view of his work and the author was selective in choosing from a big feast that was there. “Forty years of work was assessed in 6 months,” he said.
Finally, Vairamuthu who was in the midst of an ‘evening of eulogia’ categorically stated that he was in no way bigger than his predecessors like Bharathiar, Pattukottai Kalyanasundaram or Kannadasan. “Time gave me space to breathe so I excelled if Bharathi had got the support I received he would not have died so young.”
Popular debater K. Gnanasambandam who presided over said that this single book provides us an opportunity to know about Vairamuthu’s complete works till now. Moreover, he said that since it is a critique it would be a reference guide for scholars who intend to work in future.
Parvin Sultana, debater, in her felicitation speech said that research oriented works on popular subjects and writers are mostly not found in Tamil, even if found it is mostly biased or are hagiographies. “However, Arunan being part of TNPWA has provided us an unbiased work without any shades of veneration. Vairamuthu has crossed the boundaries of film lyric world and has carved a niche for himself in the literary world”, she said.
Sahitya Akademi Award winner and novelist, Su.Venkatesan, in his felicitation compared Arunan on par with veteran Marxist scholar S. V. Rajadurai and stated that his works on social history written from Marxist perspective will stand the test of time. Speaking about Vairamuthu, Venkatesan appreciated that his film lyrics are the best among his works because it was part of a medium which shapes (d) every aspect of Tamil cultural life and he used it to talk about the plight of wage labourers and peasants.
Vairamuthu’s works are a mix of Marxism and Periyarism, said S. A Perumal, editor, Semmalar magazine. M. Muthiah in his speech opined that Vairamuthu has aptly filled the space leftover after the demise of poet Kannadasan. His works would stand as icons that depict rural life.
Former M. P., Cumbum, P. Selvendran released the book and the first copy was received by Suresh. Mr. Selvendran said that Vairamuthu has scaled great heights hailing from a humble background without any backing from any form of resource. He also recalled an incident in his political life, how he as a first time M.P., ran ahead of seniors to get registered notices of call attention to speak on the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils in 1985. During his parliament speech, he recited Vairamuthu’s poem written about the struggles of Lankan Tamils.
Arunan, in his acceptance speech, said that this was the first time he is writing on a living a poet which is indeed a difficult proposition. He had initially sent the manuscript to the poet to get his acknowledgement and seeing that this was a critique on his works Vairamuthu did not hesitate to say, yes.
Answering on the much discussed question why a Marxist scholar who wrote a work like ‘Kaalanthorum Brahmaniyam,'( Brahminism Through the Ages) should write about Vairamuthu, he said that the poet’s secularism and rationalism made him an immediate choice. “Even after the fall of Soviet Union and perceptions that communism is a failed ideology, Vairamuthu wrote poems, lyrics and novels that supported the cause of the workers, peasants, he wrote against imperialism and about the dangers of globalisation. Marxism and TNPWAA made me approach him, ”Arunan added.

Cover-up on Netaji's death was led by Pranab, claims book

Outgoing Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee is responsible for the truth aboutSubhash Chandra Bose not coming out till date, says the author of a book that is to be published in July.
According to Anuj Dhar, Netaji could not have died in the 1945 aircrash in Taiwan as there is evidence of him being in Russia some years later.
Anuj has based his book on US, Indian and British records which have been declassified so far. India's Biggest Cover-Up mentions an interesting development in 1996.
The then Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs wanted to request Russia to go through the KGB archives so that whatever information they might have about Netaji can be recovered.
However, Pranab Mukherjee who was heading the ministry at that time ensured that the matter was not pursued by asking Foreign Secretary Salman Haider to convince his subordinate against approaching theRussians.
Citing this, Anuj describes Pranab as "India's foremost proponent of the Bose died in Taiwan theory." He also refers to the Justice Mukherjee Commission which sought to remove the veil of mystery over Netaji's death.
Pranab's testimony was included in the commission's report, yet it was surprisingly rejected by the Union Cabinet of which he was a member.
As for what all happened to Netaji after 1945, Anuj believes that the founder of the Azad Hind Fauj lived in independent India.
"There is some evidence to suggest he died in Faizabad but the question can only be incontestably settled when government undertakes comprehensive declassification especially of those documents held by intelligence agencies," Anuj avers.

ABOUT RATHNAVEL THEVAR

P. Rathnavel Thevar (extreme left) with Jawaharlal Nehru and other Congress leaders, at Tiruchi

The Trichinopoly United Cricket Club was started by  Rathnavel Thevar in 1914, the first cricket club in the town and reflecting in its name that of the Madras United Club which pioneered Indian cricket in Madras. The game in Madras had, however, been first formally played by the ‘Europeans only’ Madras Cricket Club. In Trichy, it was the TUCC that launched the game on a serious footing, a South Indian Railway club, comprising European and Anglo-Indian players being started only thereafter. When these two clubs met in an annual fixture, it was the Trichy equivalent of the annual Presidency match played in Madras between the Europeans and the Indians.
Rathnavel Thevar also sponsored annual matches between Trichy and Tanjore and Trichy and Pudukottai. Both these fixtures had their share of incidents whenever princely Tanjore and Pudukottai included Europeans in their teams; Thevar did not suffer Europeans kindly, though he once included one, a Maclaughlin of the I.C.S. who was a lusty striker of the ball. In one match against Tanjore, the team from the Delta included five British players. During lunch, Thevar found the five drawing up a table to lunch by themselves. His remonstration against this behaviour almost stirred up the crowd. On another occasion, G.T.B. Harvey, a good all-round sportsman and mentor of the young Rajah of Pudukottai, was coaching the Pudukottai team. During lunch he was heard lecturing the umpires on the LBW rule. Then, during the Pudukottai innings, he was loud in his bellowed protest when a Pudukottai batsman was ruled out LBW. Thevar could no longer keep silent and began loudly berating Harvey. Before the boos from the crowd turned into something nastier, Harvey left the ground.
The ground in question was the Puthur cricket ground that Thevar had developed for the TUCC after he had purchased it when he became Municipal Chairman in 1924 (a post he intermittently held till 1946). The ground was later taken over by the Government for a government hospital, on, it was alleged, the instigation of his political rivals. The last match played on the ground was a Madras-versus-Combined Districts game: the first, a competition mooted by Rathnavel Thevar, was played in 1939. The Rathnavel Trophy is today competed for in an inter-district schools tournament.
Thevar also regularly took the TUCC on a cricketing tour of Ceylon (where his kinsman R.M. Perumal, one of the best players in the Districts — which he often captained — learnt his cricket) and also hosted a match for any Ceylon team touring South India. In 1948, an ailing Thevar took TUCC hockey and cricket teams to Ceylon but returned seriously ill and passed away in May that year. During that tour he had stayed with P. Saravanamuttu, the President of the Ceylon Cricket Board and the Tamil Union club .While in Colombo he had promised his friend and personal host assistance to improve the Club’s facilities. Though he could not fulfil his promise, his friend N.S. Krishnan, to keep the promise, took his drama troupe to Colombo to stage a play for the Tamil Union, which, as a consequence, benefited to the tune of Rs. 28,000. The facilities that were developed made the Tamil Union’s Oval for many years the only venue for international cricket matches in Ceylon.
Thevar Vilas was a home that welcomed any cricketer or political leader visiting Trichy. Its walls hosted as many pictures of cricketers as of political leaders. Its library held a wealth of cricket literature. And in it Nehru and Satyamurti had dipped.
Thevar entered politics as a member of the Justice Party, but, after visiting Gandhi in Sabarmati Ashram in 1923, he became a Congressman. He was a member of the Madras Legislative Council from 1923 to 1946. He had been arrested during the Satyagraha movement and fell ill while in jail. His health never recovered fully, but that never stopped him from enthusiastically contributing to governance and sport.

Vivek wants Vadivelu back

Even though Kollywood has almost given up on comedian Vadivelu, there is still hope for him. His contemporary Vivek came out in full support for the senior artist recently. Vivek has his hands deep in the ‘Pasumai Kalam’ (Green Kalam) project along with some new releases coming up.

He initiated his Green Kalam project back in June, 2011 and is happy to have planted ‘10 lakh saplings’ by June 2012 this year, a record target. Simultaneously he is filming a string of projects including Surya’s MaatraanMachan , Kandha, Vazhipokkan and many others. Infact the filmKandha was in news for an indirect reference made on the dispute betweens comedians Vadivelu andSingamuthu but Vivek informed his fans that there was nothing of such sort and he and Vadivelu have discussed on the topic before taking up the role. Says Vivek“ The comedy field doesn’t look so nice in Vadivelu’s absence.  I want everyone to do well and hope things would ease out soon.”While Vadivelu is yet to brush of the burden, participating in the State Assembly Elections held last April, there is some hope for him in Chimbudevan’s upcoming flick Imsai Arasan 2.

Seeman wants Jiiva and Shruti

Director Seeman is all set to start work on his directorial, Pagalavan. Though Vijay was supposed to play the lead initially, the actor later opted out of the project. Now, the latest is that Seeman wants to cast Jiiva and Shruti Haasan in the lead.

Seeman says, "Though I've several scripts in hand, I want Pagalavan to be my comeback venture. The post-production work is almost over, and I think it's the right film to work on now. Jiiva and Shruti will perfectly fit the bill, and I've even told my producer, Dhanu, about my choice. I'm sure he will be able to get them onboard. Moreover, I've spoken with Jiiva about the project, and will narrate the script to him once he wraps up his night shoots."

While Jiiva confirms that he will be listening to the script soon, Shruti says, "I've not been in talks for the film."

The one-crore challenge by actor Vivek

Just as actor Vivekh brimmed with contentment over planting 13 lakh trees through his Green Kalam initiative, former president Abdul Kalam, who attended the culmination of the year-long project in Cuddalore, has given the actor the mammoth task of planting one crore saplings in the state.
Vivekh, a self-confessed fan of Abdul Kalam, sees his words as a mark of the confidence that the latter has on him and says he will soon start working towards the target. “We have decided to initiate the process from Kalam’s native town of Ramanathapuram.
After planting one lakh trees there, we will start covering all the districts towards Chennai,” he said. While the actor says many people have come forward to join him in reaching the target, he asks for schools, colleges and individuals to take part in the initiative.
The actor has penned a story based on his experiences during this project and says he is willing to direct it when he gets a producer.
Vivekh, who is happy about the reception for his role as a transgender in Murattu Kaalai that hit the screens last week, wants to focus on his acting career that has been on a dull note. “I’m playing a CBI officer in Muktha Sundar’s 10,000,00,00,000 (Pathayiram Kodi). It’s a movie like Pink Panther. He also plays a role in Shakthi Chidambaram’s Machan, in which he makes a living by renting out dogs.
He appears as himself in V Shekar’s Saravana Poigai, and is part of director Hari’s Singam 2 as well.

MESSAGE FROM Mr.Sharmalan Thevar Founder of FB Malaysian Mukkulathors

Good Morning!
The Mukkulathor community which is made up of Kallar, Maravar and Agamudayar clans have approximately 1,135 paternal surnames.
i.e Thevar, Servai, Vandayar, Thondaiman, Mankondar, Pinundar, Pallavarayar, Kalingarayar etc
I noticed that most modern Mukkulathors do not use their surname. The surname are our basic identity.
Both male and female Mukkulathors should be encouraged to use their surnames as family names similar to North Indians.
This will make the community look more organised.

Yours sincerely,

Forward Bloc to urge Left parties to support Pranab

Forward Bloc will ask other Left parties to back UPA Presidential candidate Pranab Mukherjee, saying he has earned the "widest possible acceptance", a move aimed at driving a "wedge" between Congress and Trinamool Congress.
The party, which has two MPs and 12 MLAs, will try to persuade other Left parties to support Mukherjee in the meeting of the Left parties, G Deverajan, National Secretary of Forward Bloc, told PTI.
He said the Left parties had earlier decided that the candidate should have the "widest possible acceptance" and in the present context, the Congress veteran has got support from the political spectrum.

"Mukherjee has support from all sides. UPA is behind it. NDA allies Shiv Sena and JD(U) are in his favour. Two non-UPA, non-NDA parties, BSP and SP are supporting him. Now he has the widest possible acceptance," Deverajan said

He said his party will strongly argue for supporting Mukherjee in the meeting.
"Also, our stand is that we should support Mukherjee and we should use this to drive a wedge between Congress and its ally Trinamool Congress and use it to the Left's advantage in West Bengal," he said.
Asked whether Forward Bloc will vote for Mukherjee if the Left parties decided to go against him or abstain, he said after discussions, they will take a single decision and abide by it.
CPI(M) has not firmed up its stand on the issue though indications are that the party is mulling either to support Mukherjee or abstain from the July 19 poll.
Sources said one section of the party is for abstaining from the poll while another is for supporting Mukherjee. The section advocating abstention is of the view that it cannot be seen voting for a Congress candidate.
Left parties account for around 51,000 vote value in the electoral college of 10.98 lakh vote value and Mukherjee has already garnered support of parties which has a total vote value of 5.44 lakh. If all votes polled are valid, then the winning candidate needs to get at least 5,49,442 votes

Actor Karunas gets realistic

So far the noted actor Karunas has been seen in comedy roles and character roles. However, it is now heard that he has decided to change track and get into more realistic kind of cinema.
Karunas reportedly mentioned that his favourite era was the time when films were made on middle class families and the problems they faced. He gave the credit of his success to director Bala.

He stated that more than the big heroes or the directors, his top priority is his audience and he is always concerned about their feedback towards his roles and performances.

THE BALA PATTERN

Many of the greatest minds of the world, be it Leonardo Da Vinci or Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, had a pattern in how they worked. It is not unnoticeable if they are seen with wide eyes. Similarly, a genius from Periyakulam too has a pattern. And this genius is called Bala. The director, who is presently busy with Paradesi, works with an actor twice, but a bit differently. He works with an actor in a film and works with another one in another film and ropes in both actors in a multi-starrer. Confusing, is it? Let’s take instances to make it clearer…

Sethu – Bala’s first film. He brought in Vikram to do the main role. This proved to be a big break for Vikram and the actor became one of the most sought after actor in the industry.

Nanda- The director roped in Suriya in the lead role. Again, post this film Suriya’s image as an actor grew big time.

Pithamagan- Bala’s master piece till date. The genius brought on-board both Suriya and Vikram to do the lead roles, and what a combination it proved to be.

Naan Kadavul- Arya proved his versatility in this film. He and Pooja were praised for their stunning performances. This film earned the director a National Award too.

Avan Ivan- Bala’s second multi-starrer with Arya and Vishal in the lead. The director even expected Vishal to win a National Award for his performance in the film.

Untitled film- After Paradesi, Bala will be joining hands with Vishal for the second time and the director is very particular about getting Vishal a National Award with this film.

We can also expect Atharva Murali to join the director for the second time soon, hopefully in a multi-starrer.

Bharathiraja's son is villain

Veteran director Bharathiraja introduced his son in lead role through the movie Taj Mahal. The film boasted of a stupendous music by A.R. Rahman, but failed to make an impression in box office. Following this film, the actor wasn't able to deliver any big hits.
Off the late, he decided to wear director's hat and joined as assistant head for Shankar's Endhiran. Now the actor will appear in big screen once again, but in a negative shade.

According to the sources, the actor will be playing negative role in his father Bharathiraja's upcoming film 'Annakodiyum Kodiveeranum'.

My son might become a good actor in future, asserts Prabhu

‘Ilaiya Thilagam’ Prabhu has expressed his confidence that his son Vikram Prabhu might soon become an actor of substance and manage to establish himself in the industry based purely on his talents and not as his son or the grandson of legendary Sivaji Ganesan.  Vikram Prabhu is debuting as hero with Prabhu Solomon’s Kumki opposite another debutant Lakshmi Menon.  The film is all set for its theatrical release soon.

With ‘acting’ running in his blood thanks to his father and grandfather’s legendary acring prowesses, industry observers have predicted a good future for Vikram.  In the mean time, in a free-wheeling interview to a popular magazine, Prabhu has expressed his prediction that Vikram would be making it big in films on his own.

“My son was as portly as I am; still, soon after he was signed up for Kumki, he underwent rigorous work-out and exercising to bring his weightl down by 25 kgs.  Though I didn’t visit the Kumki shootings sport even once, I’m sure he would succeed not only in his debut venture but also in future and would go on to establish him as a saleable actor in Tamil films in a big way.

“Superstar Rajinikanth has always been a part of our family.  He has been watching Vikram right from his childhood days.  After he got the Kumki assignment, Vikram went to meet Rajini Anna and seek his blessings.  I firmly believe Rajini’s wishes would help him a lot,” concluded Prabhu.

It may be realled that at a recent special screening of the film, Rajini watched the film and appreciated Vikram’s work.
