Veteran freedom fighter Balwant Singh, who had joined the Indian National Army of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and spent around seven years in a jail at Singapore, passed away due to age-related complications.
Singh (90) breathed his last at his ancestral home in Hussainpur village here on Sunday night, his family members said.
His mortal remains were consigned to flames with state honours yesterday.
While Naib Tehsildar Sanjiv Kumar placed a wreath on behalf of the district administration, a police contingent fired several rounds in the air as a mark of respect for the freedom fighter.
Singh had joined the Indian National Army of Netaji and spent around seven years in a jail at Singapore.
After independence, he joined the Artillery Corps in the Indian Army as a Nayak on January 22, 1949, and retired on August 17, 1969 after serving for 20 years.
