About 300 workers of the All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) were arrested near the city police headquarters here on Thursday 5TH OCTOBER when they were stopped from proceeding towards the Secretariat to protest against the Trinamool Congress Government’s alleged failure to protect women in the State.
Those arrested were released later in the day, the police said.
Demonstrations were also held in other parts of the State by the AIFB in protest against deterioration in the law and order situation across West Bengal.
“The Chief Minister, though a woman, has miserably failed to realise the insecurity women feel in the State in the face of growing attacks against them. She either denies or avoids reacting to these incidents reported in media. Ministers of the Trinamool Congress advise women to stay indoors after evening falls as their government is unable to do much else to make women feel safe,” said Moinuddin Shams, general secretary of the AIFB’s Kolkata district committee. He was among those present at the demonstration in the city.
Criticising the State government he said: “Ms. Banerjee’s government announced compensation scheme for rape victims. Is that a solution? The government should work towards ensuring law and order, not provide money to victims.”
The attitude of police officers at local police stations who are dealing with cases of atrocities against women is also condemnable, Mr Shams added.
The Forward Bloc has decided to hold another demonstration in the city on October 8. Party leaders also plan to call on the Governor, M K Narayanan, and hand over to him a memorandum to draw his attention to the deteriorating law and order situation in the State.
