GUWAHATI, Jan 21 – On the occasion of the 118th birth- day celebration of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on January 23, Father Lukose Cheruvalel, director of Snehalaya, and former Governor of Meghalaya Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary would be honoured with the Netaji Smarak Garima Award 2014. The All Assam Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Birthday Celebration Committee has chalked out elaborate plans to celebrate the birthday of the great nationalist leader in a two-day programme at two different venues in Guwahati. Addressing the media here, the general secretary of the committee, Sajal Sengupta said that a lot of youth-oriented activities have been taken up this year to make the younger generation aware about the works and ideology of Netaji as well as to incorporate leadership skills and patriotism into them. The committee has been organizing the Netaji birth anniversary celebration since 2006 at Netaji Chowk at Paltan Bazar. “The objective of this committee is to highlight the value and ideology of the great patriot among the people of Assam and more particularly, among the young generation. People of Assam remember with respect the role played by Netaji in 1938 as the president of the Indian National Congress and his role in saving Assam from going to the clutches of Pakistan, in cooperation with the leaders of the State. “Moreover, his contribution to the Indian freedom struggle is a glaring example of courage, exuberance and leadership traits. In the context of many problems faced by the country today, the relevance of Netaji is felt more,” he said. The birth anniversary would be celebrated on January 22 and 23 in two different venues of the city. On January 22, an art competition and other patriotic song and dance competitions would be organized at Binova Nagar LP School premises, Colony Bazar, Kahilipara. On January 23, the celebration programmes would be held at Netaji Chowk at Paltan Bazar and also at Binova Nagar. A prabhat pheri would commence at 5 am on January 23, which will be followed by a procession from Binova Nagar to Netaji Chowk, Paltan Bazar. An open session would be held at Paltan Bazar, which would be attended by Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. The session would conclude after the flag hoisting at 12.20 pm.
