RAMANATHAPURAM: The district administration has decided to enforce tight security measures for the Muthuramalinga Thevar Guru Pooja to be held for three days from October 28 at Pasumpon village near Kamuthi.
Followers of freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar visit Pasumpon village every year to celebrate his birth anniversary and pay homage at his memorial. Meanwhile, the district turned volatile following an incident at Paramakudi when large number of people were proceeding to pay their homage to Dalit Immanuel Sekaran at his memorial on September 11. Six persons were killed in police firing.
Therefore, the government had to make adequate security arrangements to ensure law and order during the Thevar Jayanthi celebrations at Pasumpon village. The district administration had decided to erect six-feet high steel barricades and wooden barricades around the helipad where the VVIPs will land.
Three-tier security will be in force at the village. The VVIPs will enter through a separate route on the left side of the memorial. There is no official information whether Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa will visit the memorial.
Meanwhile, District Collector Arun Roy and Kaliraj Maheskumar, SP, Jayaraman, DRO, and other officials visited the memorial on Wednesday and reviewed the security arrangements. The Collector instructed the officials to complete the road renovation and other repair works before the Thevar Jayanthi celebrations. A special medical team will be deployed near the memorial to attend to emergency cases. More than 10,000 police personnel will be deployed at the venue. Usually, the Collector will address the officials at a meeting in Kamudhi. But this year, he gave all instructions to the officials at the memorial.
