The box office collection of Bala’s recently released movie “Paradesi” is magnificent. The movie has collected Rs 4.86 crore in its opening weekend in Tamil Nadu.
The movie received an above average response on its release date, March 15 in many parts of Tamil Nadu. Not only the movie has received accolades in the recently announced National Film Award 2013, it has also made a good business at Tamil Nadu box office.
Trade analyst Trinath said that the Rs 40 crore budget film collected approximately Rs 4.86 crore in its opening weekend in Tamil Nadu.
But, the overseas collection was relatively dull in the UK and the US market. According to reports, the UK box office fetched only RS 16.08 lakh and the US box office fetched RS 22.48 lakh during the opening weekend.
“Paradesi” is a period drama movie based on real life incidents set in the pre-independent era. It is an adaptation from “Eriyum Panikadu”, a Tamil translation of the 1969 novel “Red Tea” by Paul Harris Daniel.
The movie narrates the sufferings of tea plantation workers of pre-independent India. The film deals with the imprisoned tea plantation workers living in Munnar in late 1930s.
Adharvaa Murali plays the role of Ottuperuki, the main character. The female leads Vedika and Dhansikaa feature in weighty roles in the movie.
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has acquired the distribution rights and released the film in central and north India with English subtitles.
Director Bala is famous for his powerful and hard-hitting films. “Paradesi” has bagged an award in the 60th National Awards announced two days ago. Poornima Ramaswamy has bagged the Best Costume Design award for giving an authentic look to the film.
Previously, Vikram won the national award (best actor) for his role as Chithan in Bala’s “Pithamagan.” Bala bagged the best director award for “Naan Kadavul” in 2009.
All the actors, who feature in Bala’s movies – be it Suriya, Vikram, Arya, Vishal, Pooja – have always given their best performances.
