CHENNAI: Chief Minister and DMK president M Karunanidhi on Tuesday took strong exception to the transfer of top police officers and District Collectors by the Election Commission (EC) based on a complaint from the opposition AIADMK. He also took on the EC for severe measures like seizure of money from even small traders in the name of implementing the model code of conduct.
Wondering what could be the reason for the Election Commission's decision to put up such unprecedented regulations, Karunanidhi asked whether the EC was really bothered about reports carried by the media in this regard every day.
The DMK chief said the present situation reminded him of the words of freedom fighter Pon Muthuramalinga Thevar: "If a woman loses her chastity, she can get over it by taking a dip in the River Ganges.but if the river itself loses its chastity, what to do?"
Referring to the seizure of money from the public and small traders, Karunanidhi said even jewellery bought for marriages were being seized and a public interest litigation has also been filed in this regard before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court.
The DMK supremo added that in an unprecedented move, the EC had transferred the State DGP, top police officers and District Collectors who were discharging their duties in an honest way, based only on a complaint given by the AIADMK.
The EC had taken this action without consulting the state government and without enquiring about the veracity of the complaint, Karunanidhi said.
