TN: Assailant regularly visited Vellaisamys house

Two-time legislator and DMK local veteran Khader Basha alias Vellaisamy Thevar (81), who was murdered at his house in Kamuthi on Friday was elected to the assembly from the Mudukulathur constituency once as an independent candidate (1971-76) and the next time on a DMK ticket (1989-90).
He had also served as chairman of Kamudhi panchayat twice and was also elected district panchayat councillor once.
According to police, when the assailant Dhanaseelan of Mela Ramanathi village struck, Vellaisamy’s wife Rukmani rushed to his aid and in the process received bleeding injuries on her hands.
“Dhanaseelan was a regular visitor at Vellaisamy’s house and therefore no one sensed anything amiss when he came today till they heard the former MLA’s screams,” a police officer said.
When Dhanaseelan tried to flee, Vellaisamy’s relatives and aides pounced on him and thrashed him to death.
As news of the former MLA’s death spread, traders in the area downed shutters and schools declared a holiday.
A large number of supporters thronged his house.
Condoling Vellaisamy’s death, Karunanidhi credited the former MLA with strengthening the party organisation in the southern region.
He recalled that Vellaisamy made it a point to call on him (Karunanidhi) whenever he went to Chennai.
Senior police officers including DIG Ramasubramanian and SP Kaliraj Maheshkumar inspected the scene of crime.
While Vellaisamy’s body was sent to the Kamuthi Government Hospital for autopsy, Dhanaseelan’s body was sent to the Aruppukottai Government Hospital.
Former DMK Ministers Suba Thangavelan and Thangam Thennarasu, former MLA Murugvel and others paid homage to the slain politician
