Pro-Tamil outfits protest presence of Lankan defence officers

Coimbatore, Jul 16 (PTI) More than 100 persons belonging to various pro-Tamil outfits were arrested today in Coimbatore and Coonoor for protesting the presence of two Sri Lankan Defence officials in the Defence Service Staff College in Wellington in Nilgiris district at Annual Interaction Session. About 50 workers belonging to Periyar Dravida Kazhakam were arrested when they squatted on the Coonoor-Mettupalayam Road. In Coimbatore, 20 activists of Naam Tamilar Katchi were arrested when they attempted to stage a demonstration in front of the Regional Passport Office. Meanwhile, Nilgiris Superintendent of Police Nizamuddin said they have not received any official information regarding the visit of Lankan Officials. Periyar Dravida Kazhakam General Secretary K Ramakrishnan asked the Centre not to allow Sri Lankan officials to visit India, particularly Tamil Nadu, for military training.
