Mob attacks TNSTC bus after desecration of statue

Tension prevailed at Serakulam near Srivaikuntam on Saturday after unidentified persons desecrated the statue of Muthuramalinga Thevar in the night. The damage to the statue, installed near the Sivan temple, was noticed in the morning by people passing through the stretch. According to police, the nose of the idol had been cracked. As the news spread, large number of people assembled near the statue and started protesting. Police soon arrived at the spot and tried to pacify the crowd. But the mob broke the rear window of a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) bus running between Nanguneri and Paruthipadu via Serakulam. olice personnel were quick to stop the mob from involving in further unruly activities. Thoothukudi SP Durai visited the spot and after inquiring about the incident said that there was indeed a crack on the nose of the statue. He said that a long-standing dispute between two gangs in the village is believed to be reason behind the incident. Security has been beefed up in the area.
