BJP focuses on Thevars, Yadavas in southern districts

The State BJP has extended an invite to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah to attend Muthuramalinga Thevar birth anniversary celebrations in Pasumpon where thousands congregate to pay homage to the leader’s tomb, party sources said.

“Since the Bihar election campaign is at full throttle, Mr. Modi may not have the time. But, we are expecting at least a senior Union Minister to participate,” a party vice-president said.

The memorial in Pasumpon in Ramanathapuram district is being frequented by Union Minister Pon. Radhakrishnan for meditation and worship. “He is keen on the BJP participating in the event in a big way,” a functionary close to the Union Minister said.

The State unit had, in the past, sent a proposal to the Union Civil Aviation Minister to name the Madurai airport after Muthuramalinga Thevar.

Meanwhile, national general secretary in-charge of Tamil Nadu P. Muralidhar Rao is set to take part in a meeting in Tirupathur in Sivaganga to mark the guru pooja celebrations of Maruthu Pandiyar brothers —freedom fighters revered by the Thevar community — on October 27.

Party sources said that on the same day, he would travel to Tirunelveli to attend a function of the Yadava community.
