Thevar Jayanti: Golden armour sent to Pasumpon

The golden armour for Muthuramalinga Thevar, which was safeguarded in a bank locker in Madurai, was despatched to Pasumpon in Ramanathapuram district, ahead of the Thevar Jayanti celebrations that begin from October 28 and culminate on the 30th.

State finance minister, O Panneerselvam came to the Indian Overseas Bank branch situated in Anna Nagar in the city on Monday and took it out from the locker, and then handed it over to the organising committee members of the Jayanthi.

In 2010, when chief minister J Jayalalithaa visited the birthplace of Thevar, the organising committee members placed a request to her to provide a golden armour. Based on their request, she presented the 13 kg golden armour on behalf of the AIADMK in February, last year. She came to Pasumpon to personally present it to the committee. As per the arrangement, O Panneerselvam signed at the bank to take the armour out of the locker and the weight of the armour was checked before handing it over to the organising committee. Later, it was taken to Pasumpon with full police protection.

At Pasumpon, the armour was received ceremoniously and adorned on the statue of Thevar. With three days of Thevar Jayanti festivities commencing on Wednesday, security has been tightened in Pasumpon and southern districts.

Thousands of people including political leaders, MPs and MLAs are expected to visit Thevar's birthplace to pay homage.

Dignitaries will start coming to Pasumpon starting from Wednesday itself. Hence, the police department based on instructions from Southern Zone IG, Anand Kumar Somani deployed three-tier security arrangements there.
