Relatives, residents seek release of AIFB leader

Parents, relatives and residents of Srivaikuntam in large numbers thronged the Tuticorin collectorate on Monday seeking the release of S. Suresh alias Kasiniventhan (39), State youth wing secretary of All India Forward Bloc, who was arrested by the police for the murder of a Puthiya Tamilagam functionary Lakshmanan alias Baskar.
The CB-CID team, probing the murder of Baskar on February 22, arrested Suresh from his house at Srivaikuntam on March 17.
His mother S. Kanniammal, submitted a petition to Collector M. Ravikumar citing that Suresh was “innocent,” and that charges framed against him were “false” and he “had no link with the murder.”
She said in the petition that the case had been transferred to the CB CID probe “deliberately” to arrest Suresh.
“The CB CID wing arrested him without any incriminating evidence,” she said.
“Baskar of Pithcanar Thoppu, Srivaikuntam, was murdered due to enmity between him and other group of people. Some politicians and anti-social elements forced the police to include Suresh as the accused.”
Suresh’s relationship with the Dalits of seven colonies surrounding his locality was good, Ms. Kanniammal said.
Adequate police force was deployed and barricades were erected to restrict the mass of people from entering the Collectorate portico.
