‘Padayatra’ to Thevar memorial: 10 held for violating police orders

Police have arrested 10 people of Seyyamangalam in Kamudhi block for taking out a ‘padayatra’ from the village to the Muthuramalinga Thevar memorial at Pasumpon, violating police orders.
When the villagers wanted to take out a ‘padayatra’ from the village to the memorial for conducting ‘Thiruvilakku puja’ on the occasion of the full moon day on Tuesday, police denied permission stating that they could go in a procession from Abiramam. However, the villagers, including women, violated the police order and went on a ‘padayatra’ passing through some sensitive villages, Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan said.
Though no untoward incident took place, the police wanted to take stern action against the villagers as their action would send a wrong signal to people in neighbouring villages. The ‘padayatra’ also posed a threat to communal harmony in this communally sensitive district, he said.
As per his orders, Paramakudi Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vinoth Santharam arrested 10 of the 20 named accused under sections 143, 149, 153 (A) 1 (b) read with 188 of Indian Penal Code (IPC).
They were produced before a Magistrate Court which remanded in judicial custody. Police have decided to charge sheet the 10 women, named in the case, the SP said.
