Trichy Ambedkar statue 'slippered'

TRICHY: Tension was palpable in the city on Monday morning after a statue of Dr Ambedkar near the central bus stand was found garlanded with slippers. In wake of the issue, members of a few political parties attempted to stage a road blockade. However, the police arrested and released them later.

The statue is situated in the Aristo roundabout and is a busy area as it connects the roads from Madurai and Dindigul. Police said they received information early on Monday morning about the incident. A photojournalist first informed the Cantonment police with photographs of the statue garlanded with two slippers. The police team led by assistant commissioner of police CK Gandhi rushed to the spot and removed the slippers from the statue. Meanwhile, the news spread across the city and members of Viduthalai Chiruthaikal Katchi (VCK), Puthiya Tamizhagam (PT) and Tamilaga Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) thronged the area. The police were put on high alert to avoid any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, about 50 persons belonged to VCK, PT and TMMK argued with the police to immediately arrest the culprits and tried to stage a road-blockade near the roundabout. The police acted swiftly and arrested about 30 persons. However, they were released in the evening. A group of lawyers also staged a demonstration in front of the district court.

Following the arrest, about 100 policemen were deployed near the statue. As a precautionary measure, police also secured a statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar statue near the central bus stand.

Police have registered a case under section 153 (a) of IPC and an investigation is on to nab the culprits. Footage from a surveillance camera near the roundabout is also being examined. Police said this was the second time such an incident had occurred in the past 15 years to the same statue of Ambedkar.
