Thevar statue

Villagers of Vadugapatti, coming under the Mandalamanickam police limit in Kamudhi taluk, allegedly installed a statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar on a platform that had been constructed on public land near a temple early on Monday. But it remained covered with thatches.

On receiving a tip-off that the five-foot bronze statue was being brought from Chennai for installation, the local police maintained a vigil and launched a vehicle check on Sunday night. However, it appeared that the villagers had already brought the statue and kept it in the village.

The villagers had sought permission from the revenue authorities to install the statue about six months ago, which was denied. However, they proceeded to build a platform, police said.

Superintendent of Police N.M.Mylvahanan said there was no tension in the area as it was dominated by the Thevar community. The police registered cases against Muthusamy and others, who allegedly installed the statue without permission.

The SP said disciplinary action was being taken against the sub-inspector and two constables attached to the Mandalamanickam police station for their slackness.
