Rithish Kumar, DMK MP jailed

As the assembly elections draw nearer things are getting ugly in the state. Ten persons sustained grievous injury in an altercation when Panchayat officials attempted to lay a road in Kavalankudi. This move was opposed by the locals as it would inconvenience them unduly and the officials were only doing all this to look good for the elections. The protest became vehement when a villager removed the key of a road – laying machine.

The protestors increased in number and insisted that the workers desist immediately. Things became serious when AIADMK and DMDK members joined the villagers. Some of the individuals who were with DMK MP, Rithish Kumar, a Lok Sabha member from Ramanathapurm, started attacking the protestors by hurling stones at them.

The angry crowd retaliated and in the violent clash that followed 10 people were injured and rushed to the hospital. AIADMK member, Narayanan was among the worst hit and is reported to be in a critical state.

The protestors refused to disperse and insisted on justice for the injured. They did not budge till the police took action against the MP and the perpetrators in his entourage. The police have arrested the MP and 9 other suspects have been taken into custody. They will be questioned before further action is taken against them.
