NHRC queries DGP on Devar Jayanthi mayhem: Statement


The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to Director General of Police, Tamil Nadu, asking him to reply within six weeks time on a complaint where he was accused of being casual to the safety and security of the people of the state, according to a statement.
The NHRC, reacting to a complaint of Saravanan Karuppa Sammy, International Chairman of the World Human Rights Commission and Rescue Centre, asked DGP K Ramanujam to file a report on the complaint that he did not arrange proper security for the people, who had gathered to celebrate Devar Jayanthi at Ramanathapuram district.

The complainant, in his letter to the NHRC, had said six people died and several injured as anti-social elements created problem during the annual function of Devar Jayanthi on October 30.

He also accused the DGP of directing the state police to use force in a barbaric manner against the general public.

Taking note of the compaint, the NHRC yesterday issued the notice to the DGP.
