Permission sought to install bronze statues of Thevar

Two writ petitions were filed in the Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday seeking permission to install bronze statues of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar at private land in Veppankulam and Kovilangulam villages in Kamuthi Taluk of Ramanathapuram district.

The petitioners V. Ramaiah (46) of Veppankulam and C. Ponnusamy (68) of Kovilangulam had challenged separate orders passed by the Ramanathapuram Collector on October 26 rejecting their requests on the basis of an adverse report submitted by the Inspector of Kamuthi Police Station. Claiming that the police report had been prepared behind their back, the petitioners said that the High Court in a judgement rendered last year had held that the State could not prevent individuals from installing statues of their leaders in private lands.
