Thevar Jayanthi celebrated in grandeur


Floral tributes were paid to freedom fighter and late leader of All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) U.Muthuramalinga Thevar on his 107th Birth anniversary and 52nd Guru Pooja celebrations, amid unprecedented tight security, here today. Chief Minister O.Panneer Selvam and a galaxy of State Ministers Sellur K.Raju, R.Vaithilingam, C.Vijayabhaskar, P.Chendur Pandiyan, R.Kamaraj, S.Sundararaj and R.P.Udaya Kumar placed wreaths and paid homage at the decorated memorial of Muthuramalinga Thevar, an Icon of dominant Thevar community at Pasumpon village, on behalf of Tamil Nadu government. Former Chief Minister and AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa paid homage to a decorated portrait of Thevar at her Poes Garden Home in Chennai. Senior DMK Leader MK Stalin, former DMK Ministers Thangam Thennarasu, I.Periyasamy, Pon Muthuramalingam, K.R.Periya Karuppan, and Subha Thangavelan paid homage on behalf of the party. Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) supremo Vaiko, Pattali Makkal Katchi PMK) President G.K.Mani, Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam Founder-President G.M.Sridhar Vandaiyar, AIMMK President, Dr.N.Sethuraman among leaders of various political parties and Thevar federations paid homage at the memorial. Thousands of people, including women and children of Thevar community thronged the memorial from various parts of the State to pay their respects. A large number of men and children tonsured their heads while women cooked sweet Pongal to mark Thevar Jayanthi celebrations.
